Sheffield Wednesday were once again on the receiving end of what appeared to be some poor refereeing decisions last weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday stretch their winless run in the Championship to five games now, following their 2-1 defeat vs Luton Town over the weekend.
But like the 1-1 draw vs QPR the weekend before, Danny Rohl and his side may feel hard done by to have not won the game, with certain refereeing decisions during the Luton game going against Wednesday.
The Owls had Di’Shon Bernard sent off for a handball inside his own penalty box, though images suggest that the ball struck Bernard’s shoulder. Luton scored said penalty.
Then for the Hatters’ late winner, the ball was pictured striking the arm of Carlton Morris before he scored.
Sheffield Wednesday were denied a penalty claim of their own, on a day that really summed up the current frustrations at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday nearing record for most amount of games without a penalty
Sheffield Wednesday didn’t have a single penalty throughout the whole of the 2023/24 season, and they’re yet to receive one this season.
Currently, Darren Moore’s Port Vale hold the record for the most amount of games that a British team has gone without receiving a penalty; 73, with Wednesday currently on 62.
Speaking on Football Heaven about the Luton controversies and Wednesday’s penalty drought, BBC pundit Rob Staton said: “Sheffield Wednesday’s last penalty was against Peterborough, at the ‘Hillsborough Miracle’, 494 days go.
“What’s going on? It’s just unheard of for a team to have that level of misfortune with officiating, that Sheffield Wednesday have not had a penalty for nearly 500 days.”

What has been said about VAR in the Championship
After games like the Luton one, there’ll be inevitable cries for VAR to be installed in the Championship, although the vast majority of fans remain against its instillation in the second tier.
There was vote from the Premier League on whether or not to keep VAR, of which the Premier League teams largely voted in favour of keeping it.
There’s been no real discussions of installing it in the Championship because of the cost of installing it in stadiums, and the fact that clubs may need to undergo quite vast rebuilding within their stadiums to accommodate VAR.

Sheffield Wednesday need to make their own luck
Sheffield Wednesday are certainly down in the dumps right now. But their performances in the last two games have been very positive, and if VAR had been present, they might have been two wins.
Two defeats won’t decide Sheffield Wednesday’s fortunes this season. Rohl simply needs to keep his players on track and playing how they’re currently playing, and the wins will soon come.
And soon enough, luck may start to fall Wednesday’s way, and the Owls might even end their penalty drought after all this time.
