One Sheffield Wednesday castaway has been praised whilst thriving on loan in League One.
The Owls have gone into the second international break of the 2024/25 campaign off the back of a well-needed away victory against Coventry City, which saw Shea Charles bag a late-winner to hand Sheffield Wednesday their first away league victory of the season.
Danny Rohl’s side, who currently sit on a respectable 11 points in their opening nine Championship games have been fairly assured defensively, apart from the odd blip against likes of Sunderland, whilst the team’s troubles have been sourced back to the issues in front of goal.
Sheffield Wednesday signed several attackers in the summer, including Ike Ugbo and Jamal Lowe, however both have not quite been able to make a statement in S6 after scoring a combined one goal so far this season, and the issues are highlighted even more when the players that were deemed surplus to requirements this season that were loaned out are proving their goal scoring abilities elsewhere.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Mallik Wilks shines in League One loan spell with Rotherham United
One Sheffield Wednesday player that was deemed as not being part of Rohl’s plans for the forthcoming campaign was Mallik Wilks, whose time at the club has been riddled with injuries up until this point, and all parties came to the agreement that a loan spell was best for his career.
Rather surprisingly, Wilks has grasped the opportunity with both hands, and he is proving to be a real handful on the wing for Rotherham United under Steve Evans, especially in the most recent draw against Peterborough United.
Per Rotherham Advertiser, Wilks was given a glowing reference following a solid showing on the road, where they said: “[Wilks] Took Peterborough apart in the first half and scored a Goal-of-the-Season contender. A game-changer when he plays out wide.”

Does Mallik Wilks have a future at Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls winger was never able to make a significant impact in S6 ever since his arrival from Hull City, and he was only able to make 31 league appearances across two seasons, with the large majority coming from off-the-bench.
Whilst he has been just let go on a temporary basis, it doesn’t look likely at this point that he will be able to stake a claim in the Sheffield Wednesday side, and if he continues to perform to his highest level with the Millers, it would be more likely that a permanent deal was struck between the Owls and the League One side.
It is best for all parties involved to strike a line on Wilks’ Sheffield Wednesday career, and it would certainly benefit his career to move onto pastures new on a permanent basis, and there is every chance that South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United is the perfect place for him to be permanently following the conclusion of his loan spell at the end of the campaign.
