Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl needs to find an answer to his side’s shortcomings during this month’s international break.

Sheffield Wednesday were tipped to be dark horses in the Championship play-off race this season.

But after the opening four games of the 2024/25 season, the Owls have just three points on the board, and now supporters are wondering whether their side is in for another relegation scrap.

Danny Rohl’s side lost 3-0 vs Millwall last time out, marking a three-game losing streak going into this month’s international break.

For Rohl, there’ll be plenty of work to do on the training ground in the next couple of weeks, but where he starts may be difficult to gauge.

The Owls have problems at both ends of the pitch right now; there’s no clean sheet since the opening day win vs Plymouth Argyle, and no goals scored since then either.

But BBC pundit Rob Staton has given his verdict on where the Owls might be going wrong, and who they might be missing right now.

Danny Rohl told to reinstate Callum Paterson and Liam Palmer at Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking on Football Heaven, Staton explained how the re-introductions of Callum Paterson and Liam Palmer could help give Wednesday a bit more stability on the pitch.

And in Palmer, Rohl uncovered an unlikely goal hero towards the back-end of last season, and so Palmer could help to ease the current goal-scoring woes in the Wednesday first-team.

Staton said: “Maybe it is the time to bring back Liam Palmer and Callum Paterson.

“Least of all Liam Palmer; the end of last season he was chipping in with some goals. Wednesday aren’t creating anything at the minute, maybe you need someone like that.

“I’m not saying that Liam Palmer is the answer to all of Sheffield Wednesday’s creative and goal-scoring problems here, but he chipped in with a few.”

The problem that Paterson and Palmer face at Sheffield Wednesday

In a sense, Paterson and Palmer are very similar; they’re versatile players, whose best position may not be known by Rohl.

The pair are certainly viewed as players who can slot into the Sheffield Wednesday XI whenever there’s a player injured, or who can come off the bench and fill in wherever needed.

So starting them may be difficult, given the possible fact that Rohl wouldn’t know where to best deploy the pair.

Paterson is more so an attacker and could come in for Anthony Musaba who’s struggled this season, whereas Paterson got a brace in the recent Carabao Cup win vs Grimsby Town.

Either way, something’s got to give soon for Sheffield Wednesday, who return to action vs QPR later this month.
