Danny Rohl and his first-team squad pulled off a memorable escape in the second tier, but after a seemingly-impressive summer transfer window, expectations were much higher for this 2024/25 season.
So far, the Owls have disappointed.
Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the opening day of the season and that win perhaps inflated expectations for these early stages of the campaign.
Wednesday are winless since then but halted a run of three-straight defeats with a 1-1 draw vs QPR at Hillsborough last weekend.
On Tuesday night, Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackpool 1-0 in the Carabao Cup and so Rohl takes his side into this weekend on a win.
The Owls head to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town this weekend in what is going to be another challenging game.
Rob Staton verdict on where Sheffield Wednesday need to place this season
Going into this campaign, many backed Sheffield Wednesday to be dark horses in the Championship.
Since then, fans have largely limited their expectations, and BBC pundit Rob Staton has revealed where he thinks the Owls need to finish in the Championship, in order to claim ‘progress’.
Speaking on Football Heaven on Tuesday night, Staton said: “A good season for Wednesday is probably 15th, isn’t it?
“Don’t get embroiled in a relegation battle and be somewhat comfortable two weeks into April, that’s progress.”

Can Sheffield Wednesday beat the drop in the Championship this season
Going off the last four results and performances, many might now be thinking that Wednesday are going to be in the relegation mix yet again this season.
But after that solid performance at QPR, where Wednesday conceded an unfortunate and quite controversial late goal, there’s a sense that the team will soon click.
And it’s only a few months ago that Wednesday were down and out in the Championship, only for some Rohl magic to keep them in the division.
It’s still very early into the campaign as well. There’s 41 games left to play and so there’s no need to panic about Wednesday’s fortunes right now.
Rohl has proved himself before, and with some more fine-tuning, and when his strikers eventually discover their scoring touch, Wednesday could propel up the table.
A 15th place finish is certainly achievable.
