Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has discussed a number of things this week, including Barry Bannan’s future.
Ahead of the Championship clash against Burnley at Hillsborough this weekend, Danny Rohl has talked over a number of topics.
One topic has been the future of Barry Bannan. Bannan signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract in the summer but is widely thought to be out of contract next summer.
He’s had a fine season so far, too. Despite early criticism, Bannan’s fine form last month lead to a nomination for the September Championship Player of the Month award.
The 34-year-old has scored twice and assisted once in nine Championship appearances this season.
Come next season, though, Rohl may find himself in a bit of a pickle with Bannan thought to be out of contract, and midfield partner Shea Charles set to see his loan from Southampton expire.
Carlton Palmer critical of ‘premature’ Danny Rohl claim about Barry Bannan
Rohl discussed replacing Bannan at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week, speaking about the difficulties of eventually doing so.
Speaking to Football League World though, pundit and former Owls man Carlton Palmer has labelled talk of replacing Bannan as ‘premature’.
Palmer said: “I think that’s a bit premature. Obviously, Bannan’s not going to play on and on for years, but he’s only 34, and he’s a very fit player.
“Last season he played 42 times in the Championship, the season before he played 41 times in League One. Previously to that it was 45 in League One, and it goes on and on and on.
“He’s a fit lad who can play week in, week out. I would still expect Sheffield Wednesday to secure Bannan’s services if he continues to play the way he is playing this season.
“I would assume he will get at least one more year.”

As well as Bannan, it’s also widely speculated that the club handed Liam Palmer a one-year extension last summer.
Despite Transfermarkt suggesting that Antony Musaba is out of contract in 2025, a prior report from The Star revealed that the Dutchman was set to sign a contract until 2026 upon his arrival in 2023.
Callum Paterson, Marvin Johnson, Pierce Charles, and Michael Smith are reportedly out of contract next summer.
Akin Famewo and Pol Valentin are also out of contract but Sheffield Wednesday are working on new deals for the defensive duo.
