Sheffield Wednesday are one of the oldest clubs in the English Football League.
Sheffield Wednesday under Danny Rohl are trying to get back to the promise land of the Premier League, coming up to 25 years since their relegation from the English top flight.
Rohl looks like the man for the job. He guided the Owls to a great escape in the Championship last time round, and despite a slow start to the 2024/25 season, there remains a newfound positivity surrounding the club going forward.
Sheffield Wednesday remains a club steeped in history and on Wednesday, the club celebrated their 157th birthday, having been founded on September 4th 1867.
The Owls shared their birthday celebrations on Instagram and it garnered a wide response, with comments and well-wishes from a couple of former fan favourites.
Lucas Joao and Atdhe Nuhiu comment on Sheffield Wednesday post
Lucas Joao and Atdhe Nuhiu are two well-liked and prolific former Sheffield Wednesday strikers.
In 127 total appearances for Sheffield Wednesday Joao scored 29 goals, whilst Nuhiu scored 50 in 277 games for the Owls.
Joao was recently linked with a return to the Championship ahead of deadline day but remains a free agent.
Nuhiu is currently playing in the Austrian Bundesliga tier with SCT Altach.
Commenting on Sheffield Wednesday’s birthday post, Joao wrote: “Happy birthday to us WAWAW,” and Nuhiu commented: “Happy Birthday.”
Sheffield Wednesday have another iconic striker in the making
Joao and Nuhiu, the latter in particular, were two very well-liked and very good strikers in their day.
And Rohl may well have another Joao or Nuhiu in the making in Ike Ugbo.
Sheffield Wednesday signed Ugbo for £3million during the summer transfer window, bringing the Canadian international back to S6 following his impressive loan spell from Troyes last season.
He’s off the mark this season, albeit scoring in the Carabao Cup win vs Grimsby Town, having missed all of pre-season with Wednesday.
But Ugbo, along with the likes of summer signings Charlie McNeill and Jamal Lowe, will look to score the goals needed to fire Sheffield Wednesday up the table in the coming weeks.
The Owls have been out of the Premier League for far too long and it’s about time that the club, under Dejphon Chansiri, mounted another serous push for promotion.
Though it’s easier said than done, as the Owls are finding out.
