Sheffield Wednesday kick-start their 2024/25 Championship season with a visit from Wayne Rooney and his new Plymouth Argyle side on August 11th.
Rooney took charge of the Green Army in May following his short-lived spell as Birmingham City manager last season, winning just two of 15 games in charge.
Birmingham City were eventfully relegated from the Championship after finishing in 22nd place of the table.
Plymouth finished in 21st and Sheffield Wednesday in 20th, with three points splitting the three teams.

Plymouth Argyle have so far signed four new players this summer, with perhaps their most impressive capture being that of Toulouse youngster Ibrahim Cissoko.
He’s joined on loan for the 2024/25 campaign, along with Muhamed Tijani from Slavia Prague and Darko Gyabi from Leeds United (Plymouth beat Sheffield Wednesday to the January loan signing of Gyabi last season).
Plymouth have also signed Nathnael Ogbeta on a free transfer from Swansea City and have so far managed to keep hold of Morgan Whittaker, who scored 19 goals and assisted eight more in the Championship last season.
What does Plymouth Argyle’s pre-season look like under Wayne Rooney
Plymouth have recently been in Marbella for a pre-season training camp where they played their first pre-season friendly.
The Green Army drew vs 2-2 South African side Orlando Pirates and have four more games coming up before the start of the new season.
This weekend, Plymouth head to Cheltenham Town, then the following week play away at Torquay United, before playing at Bristol Rovers on the 30th, and then at MK Dons on August 3rd.
What should Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday expect from Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle
Rooney certainly has a lot to prove after his torrid showing with Birmingham City last season.
He took over when the club was in 6th place of the table but set them up for relegation. During his tenure, though, it was clear to see that Rooney dons a high press.
Like Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, Rooney got his Birmingham City players playing much higher up the pitch.
But unlike Rohl, Rooney couldn’t make that style of play work at Birmingham City, and it really remains to be seen whether or not he can do at Plymouth Argyle.
It’s another tough job given Plymouth’s poor second half of last season and what’s been fairly underwhelming start to the summer transfer window, at least compared to Sheffield Wednesday.
But they still have some class in their ranks, especially in attack with players like Whittaker and Ryan Hardie who scored a combined 31 Championship goals last season.
Although a difficult opener for the Owls, their pre-season business and the current feel-good mood around the club suggests that they’ll take a lot of belief into this season opener at Hillsborough.
