Sheffield Wednesday are considering reigniting their interest in Duncan McGuire this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of Duncan McGuire was one of the most chaotic in recent years, having first made a bid for the striker days before deadline day.
The 23-year-old, who scored 15 goals for Orlando City last term, had already received interest from the likes of Anderlecht and Blackburn Rovers.
Having seen offers turned down for McGuire, Sheffield Wednesday were suddenly forced to compete with Blackburn in the race for the attacker.
Their Championship rivals eventually looked set to sign McGuire, however their deal collapsed overnight and he was left in limbo after already flying into England.
While The Owls were given a glimmer of hope, Rovers eventually confirmed they had signed the American on deadline day.
However, the drama didn’t stop there. The club have since put out a statement revealing that an admin error meant that they hadn’t failed the paperwork in time and McGuire would instead return to the MLS.
While Blackburn are eager to snap the forward up ahead of a permanent move in the summer, reports have now claimed Sheffield Wednesday will look to do the same thing.
According to Alan Nixon, Danny Rohl‘s side will make a new bid for McGuire at the end of the season – on one condition.
Nixon wrote on his Patreon: “Sheffield Wednesday will make a new bid for an American striker Duncan McGuire – if they beat the drop.
“The Orlando hit man flew in for talks with the Owls on the last day of the window but headed for Blackburn instead as they dithered.
The Blackburn deal collapsed after a paperwork error and McGuire will now return to the MLS but Wednesday still want him permanently as long as they stay in the Championship.
“Rovers are also looking to sign McGuire on a full time contract in the next few months.”
Is a move for Duncan McGuire likely?
Sheffield Wednesday clearly really admire Duncan McGuire, but Blackburn had previously won the race for the US international and that surely hands them the advantage in their next attempt.
Rovers will also look to secure a deal for McGuire in the next few months, which could well happen before the Owls know whether they will be in the Championship next term or not.
This could well mean their league rivals have finally confirmed a deal for the striker before Sheffield Wednesday can guarantee him second tier football.
