Sheffield Wednesday have had a late bid for a US international turned down this weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday have already added Ike Ugbo to their ranks in a bid to bolster their attack, making his first start in yesterday’s draw with Coventry City.
Dejphon Chansiri has already made it clear that he is prepared to splash the cash on a new striker this month, though they are rapidly running out of time to add quality to their squad.
However, Tom Bogert of The Athletic has now reported that Sheffield Wednesday have seen a bid rejected for Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire.
Bogert wrote: “Orlando City rejected an offer from Sheffield Wednesday for forward Duncan McGuire, sources briefed on the bid tell The Athletic.
“McGuire, 22, just made his debut with the U.S. national team this month. He’s likely to be on the United States squad at the Olympics this summer. He had 15 goals and three assists across 1,930 minutes across all competitions in his debut professional season.
“Sheffield Wednesday isn’t the only team interested in McGuire ahead of the transfer deadline, the sources say.”
McGuire has attracted interest from across Europe, while Blackburn Rovers have reportedly already had a loan offer for him turned down too.
It was believed that Chansiri was willing to pay up to £30,000-per-week for a new forward, though McGuire only earns around £1,400-per-week in Orlando.
Who is Duncan McGuire?
Born in Nebraska, Duncan McGuire joined Oregon-based team Lane United in 2022.
The striker netted four goals and provided three assists in eleven appearances, before he was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City months later.
He quickly caught the eye in his debut campaign in the American top division and bagged 15 goals across all competitions, finishing second in the Eastern Conference and reaching the play-off semi-finals.
McGuire’s form earned him his promotion from the United States U23 team to the senior national team, making his international debut in the US’ defeat to Slovenia earlier this month.
McGuire has attracted interest from a number of clubs including Anderlecht, Bologna and Blackburn, but is yet to leave the MLS.
The American’s initial contract was set to expire in December, but the club instead took the option to further extend his deal by another two years.
