Sheffield Wednesday could be in store for a busy January transfer window as the Owls vie for Championship safety.
Danny Rohl finds his Sheffield Wednesday side in 22nd place of the Championship table after a 3-1 win over Hull City on New Year’s Day.
The Owls are now just three points behind Darren Moore‘s Huddersfield Town in 21st and go up against Southampton at St Mary’s in their next league outing.
There’s an FA Cup clash with Cardiff City at Hillsborough coming up this weekend, though, and so there’s time for Rohl and Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell to get to work in the transfer market.

John Buckley returns to Blackburn Rovers
Loan man John Buckley has returned to parent club Blackburn Rovers following an unsuccessful loan spell with the Owls.
The midfielder featured 13 times in the Championship and failed to record a single goal contribution, with injury cutting short his spell in South Yorkshire.
Sheffield Wednesday duo tipped to leave
Two Wednesday outcasts have been tipped to leave this month; Lee Gregory and Tyreeq Bakinson.
Gregory has started jus once under Rohl, with two more substitute appearances to add to that, with recent reports revealing that the 35-year-old now has a number of suitors in the Football League.
Bakinson meanwhile has recently come back into the fold, coming off the bench in Wednesday’s last three.
But as he enters the final six months of his Sheffield Wednesday deal, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that he’s now in advanced talks to sign for Belgian club Standard Liege.
Danny Rohl reveals Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer ‘need’
Speaking ahead of this month’s transfer window, Rohl revealed that what his side most need in this month’s transfer window is a new striker.
Despite the emergence of Bailey Cadamarteri, Wednesday remain a team with very little quality in attack, boasting the joint-worst scoring record in the Championship with just 21 goals to their name this season.
Rohl is quoted as saying:
“We need in front some players that have maybe really the quality to finish. This is in the whole team and you can see this is a team that is able to compare with our opponents. I have never seen a game since I arrive here that we weren’t in the game, OK maybe you look back and maybe Millwall, but in this game we had many chances. This is the good point, we can face every opponent but also to take something we need everything and we must be much more clinical in both boxes.”
Will we see any movement in the next week?
Rohl has known for a long time now what he needs in this month’s window, and with Beadell arriving at the club last month, work on new signings may well have been in place for a number of weeks now.
Expect the Owls to rely on the loan market though, and expect Premier League and Championship clubs to want to get their own business done before finalising any loan exits.
That could mean that the Owls are forced to wait until later in the window to do their business.
But that gives them a chance to offload some fringe players first, so expect the first bit of Sheffield Wednesday transfer news this month to be a player leaving the club.
