Sheffield Wednesday go up against Cardiff City in the FA Cup next month.
Sheffield Wednesday face Championship rivals Cardiff City in the FA Cup in January, in what will be Danny Rohl‘s first taste of a domestic cup competition in English football.
And it should be a tough game; expect both teams to line up with a strong XI but expect both teams to field some youngsters too.
These early rounds of the FA Cup make for a great chance to give some unseen youngsters a run out, and gain some experience.
It also gives the managers a chance to see what they can do in a first-team fixture.
Here we look at three Sheffield Wednesday talents that Rohl could unleash vs Cardiff City next month…
Joey Phuthi
Winger Joey Phuthi was in the squad that travelled down to Norwich City earlier in the month.
He wasn’t in the team, but he was part of the squad that travelled, and it suggests that he’s definitely in Rohl’s thinking ahead of 2024.
Pacey attacking players looks like a key part of Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday and so he needs some depth and cover for players like Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama, who could burn out quite quickly with a congested fixture list.
Phuthi then could make his debut vs Cardiff and if he impresses, he could work his way into the first-team picture.
Academy boss Steve Haslam has described Phuthi as an ‘exciting’ player.
Gi Siqueira
The Brazilian full-back joined after a lengthy trial period in the summer.
He’s been playing regularly for the Owls’ U21s side and with the recent injury blow to Sam Reed, who looked like he was next in line to follow in the footsteps of Bailey Cadamarteri, Siqueira could now be given a chance.
The full-back departments at Sheffield Wednesday are ageing and this could be a position that Rohl looks to rejuvenate with some youth players next year.
Pierce Charles
The 18-year-old shot-stopper is yet to be seen in the Sheffield Wednesday first-team, but it looks like he could potentially make his debut against Cardiff City.
Expect Cameron Dawson to be rested and whilst Devis Vasquez would be the next in line to come in, he could yet move on next month if the Owls target a new goalkeeper, and it could make more sense to Rohl to give Charles a chance.
The Wednesday boss is obviously keen to the gap between youth teams and the first-team and so picking Charles over loan players like Vasquez makes sense.
