Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt another injury blow going into 2024.
Sheffield Wednesday have had their share of injuries throughout 2023, and throughout this season so far.
Danny Rohl has been without some key players since replacing Xisco Munoz earlier in the campaign and now he has a fresh injury blow, albeit not a pressing one for the first-team.
Youngster Sam Reed, who’s recently been training with the first-team, has been ruled out until the New Year with a foot injury, as per The Star.
Rohl recently discussed Reed’s inclusion in first-team training, saying that he was keeping an eye on the U21s full-back following the breakthrough of Bailey Cadamarteri.
Sam Reed suffers injury setback at Sheffield Wednesday
It’s said that Reed has suffered a foot injury and that he’ll now be sidelined until next month at least, potentially missing some key games including a Steel City derby at U21s level in January.
The 20-year-old full-back joined the Owls from non-league side Brighouse Town earlier in the year and has since become an important member of the U21s team, with Joe Crann describing him as a ‘top performer’ at that level.
A huge blow, but patience needed
With Reed seemingly having been on the peripheries of the first-team, to suffer this injury blow now is a setback for him, but thankfully it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury.
Reed looks set to miss a few weeks but nothing more, as per The Star’s report, and so he can look forward to a return to action in the New Year and hopefully an inclusion in the Owls’ first-team in the second half of the campaign.
And he really has a clear path to follow thanks to Cadamarteri.
The 18-year-old has shown his former U21s teammates that there is a pathway for the youth players at the club and that Rohl will entrust them if they’re good enough.
It’s a positive place to be right now and for the first time in years, there seems to be a definite link between the first-team and youth teams, which is something that Rohl said he would deliver upon his arrival.
Up next for the Owls is a home game vs Cardiff City this weekend.
The Bluebirds have won just one of their last five following their impressive start to the season, currently sitting in 12th.
A win for Wednesday could lift them to within three points of safety.
