Sheffield Wednesday signed a horde of new players in the summer. But one signing that’s gone completely under the radar is that of Gui Siqueira.
Sheffield Wednesday’s summer of 2023 is a memorable one for all the wrong reasons.
The club and Darren Moore parted ways just weeks after earning promotion from League One, with the club then appointing arguably their worst ever manager in Xisco Munoz.
And the managerial mayhem was accompanied by a poor summer transfer window which saw the Owls sign a number of new players, though current boss Danny Rohl has been left with an overall, very poor side.
Gui Siqueira joined, but where is he?
One player who was among those to sign in the summer was Brazilian teen Siqueira.
Formerly of the Brentford and QPR youth academies, Siqueira was on trial with Sheffield Wednesday for a number of weeks before landing a professional deal in July.
And whilst Siqueira is yet to make an impression on the first-team, he has been playing for the club’s U21s at the age of just 18.
He was last reported to be in action for the 21s last week, in defence alongside the likes of Michael Ihiekwe who was gaining some minutes.
Also in the side that lost to Fleetwood Town that day were names like Cian Flannery and Rio Shipston, with Siqueira clearing a goal-bound shot off the line.
Too early for Siqueira to play for Sheffield Wednesday?
Wednesday fans are often frustrated at the lack of youngsters progressing up and into the first-team.
Bailey Cadamarteri is the latest and whilst it’s taken him a long time to get there, there does seem to be a shift in mentality since Rohl’s arrival, with the German often speaking about improving the link between the youth and development teams and the first-team.
So for the likes of Siqueira, who is seemingly a prospect given the fact that he’s already an U21s player at 18 years old, there’s definitely an improving scope to eventually make his name in the Sheffield Wednesday first-team.
But for the Brazilian full-back, next season may be a more realistic target.
The Owls look destined for relegation and they also have a number of players out of contract next summer, so the club may yet be forced to give opportunities to the likes of Siqueira and co next year.
