Di’Shon Bernard has been the subject of praise following Sheffield Wednesday’s win over Hull City last night.
Championship survival looks to be within touching distance now for Sheffield Wednesday, with yesterday’s victory over Hull City taking them within three points of safety.
The Owls had struggled for consistency under Danny Rohl and headed into the clash off the back of two wins and two defeats in their last four games.
Meanwhile, Hull City were looking to return to the play-off positions as they sat one point from sixth place.
It was Sheffield Wednesday that impressed on home soil though, and it was certainly helped by a controversial red card for Hull City on the half hour mark.
The hosts took advantage of Hull’s position, with a third-half demolition see Marvin Johnson, Djeidi Gassama and Josh Windass claim all three points at Hillsborough.
It was a deserved win for The Owls, who had 23 shots and 63 per cent possession in their first game of 2024.
It was the trio of goal-scorers that received the most plaudits, but Sheffield Wednesday’s defence were also at the heart of another quality performance.
The Star journalist Joe Crann was particularly impressed with Di’Shon Bernard, who did another brilliant job at showing exactly why he is ‘so highly rated’.
After giving Bernard a 8 rating, Crann wrote: “Another really strong outing from the Wednesday defender, showing once more why he’s become so highly rated at the club. Had one mazy foray forward and defended excellently.”
How impressive has Di’Shon Bernard been?
Di’Shon Bernard has been excellent under Danny Rohl, and the German’s admiration for him is clear after playing the full 90 minutes on nine occasions since his arrival.
The 23-year-old’s defensive abilities were certainly on show against Hull, making one tackle, one interception and two clearances. Bernard was also calm and composed, completing an impressive 96% of his passes (64) and also succeeding with two out of two of his attempted dribbles.
It has really summarised an impressive campaign for the summer signing, with the Manchester United academy graduate making the second-most clearances in the squad (51), second-most shots blocked (10), third-most aerials won (69) and the third-most passes completed (775).
Praise also came for his centre-back partner Michael Ihiekwe, who replaced the injured Akin Famewo. The 31-year-old was ‘largely faultless’ during yesterday’s win.
Sheffield Wednesday had suffered a number of injuries ahead of the Hillsborough tie, but seemed undisturbed as they claimed the comfortable win against Liam Rosenior’s side.
