A key Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer target is set to join a rival Championship club.
Sheffield Wednesday don’t look set to add to their nine summer signings in the immediate future.
So far this summer, Sheffield Wednesday have signed all of Ben Hamer, James Beadle (on loan), Max Lowe, Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson, Nathaniel Chalobah, Jamal Lowe, Olaf Kobacki, and Jamal Lowe.
Danny Rohl looks eager to add to that number before his side kick off their 2024/25 Championship season with a home game vs Plymouth Argyle on August 11th.
The Owls are keen to re-sign last season’s loan duo Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda.
Rohl has suggested that a deal for Ugbo is not yet close, whilst Poveda has been linked with Sunderland following his Leeds United release earlier this summer.
Owls fans are desperate for the Colombian to return to Hillsborough on a permanent basis this summer.
But it appears as though Poveda is now set to join a rival Championship club.
Sheffield Wednesday transfer target Ian Poveda set to join Sunderland
On Wednesday, an image circulated on social media which appeared to show Poveda stood outside the Sunderland training ground, holding the club scarf and having his picture taken.
There was no official confirmation that Poveda was set to join the Black Cats.
But Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has now provided that; he’s revealed on X that Poveda ‘has undergone a medical’ and that the 24-year-old ‘will be announced as a new signing in the coming hours’.
Details of Poveda’s contract are yet to be revealed.
What next for Sheffield Wednesday in the summer transfer window
At the start of the summer, a return for Poveda seemed vital. But after bringing in the likes of Kobacki and Lowe, and securing a new deal for Windass too, a return for Poveda became less important, it seemed.
He would’ve certainly added more depth and quality to the Sheffield Wednesday first-team squad, though there’s the obvious question marks over his injury record.
Sunderland though will be signing a player who can really lift supporters and provide that necessary bit of magic in the final third.
His Sheffield Wednesday loan spell appeared to set him up for a good summer transfer despite a tough four years with Leeds United.
Poveda, if he can stay fit at Sunderland and last a whole season, will undoubtedly become a fan favourite.
Rohl will be hoping that Poveda doesn’t come back to haunt the Owls next season.
