Sheffield Wednesday star watched by three Premier League clubs as Owls brace for January approaches

Sheffield Wednesday are readying for potential Premier League approaches for one of their first-team stars in the upcoming January transfer window.

It’s really not very often that Sheffield Wednesday attract outside interest in their players, not least interest from the Premier League.

But since Danny Rohl’s arrival at Hillsborough in 2023, the players have taken it up a notch, and now the Owls seem to have a few players who might be of interest to clubs in the top flight in the coming years.

Especially with the names coming through the academy: Bailey Cadamarteri has had Premier League links in the past and is currently plying his trade out on loan at Lincoln City.

Elsewhere, academy goalkeeper Pierce Charles has gone on to become Northern Ireland’s no.1 before he’s even made his Championship debut for the Owls.

And it’s the 19-year-old shot-stopper who’s been catching the eye of top flight clubs ahead of January.

Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Pierce Charles at Sheffield Wednesday

An emerging report from The Star has revealed that Charles has Premier League interest in the build up to the January transfer window.

Their report states that ‘at least three Premier League clubs have attended matches to watch’ Charles in action for both Wednesday and Northern Ireland this season.

Furthermore, Sheffield Wednesday ‘could receive formal approaches of interest’ during the winter window, but it’s ‘not yet known what Wednesday’s response to interest would be’.

Charles has started the last four games in goal for Northern Ireland’s senior team, having made four appearances in the Carabao Cup with Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team this season.

Danny Rohl has clear verdict on Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeper situation

Charles has certainly caught the eye this season. He’s shone on the international stage with Northern Ireland, and Charles was also named Sheffield Wednesday’s Man of the Match against Brentford in the cup earlier in the campaign.

But Rohl has stated more than once this season that Beadle is his no.1 choice goalkeeper. Charles possibly leaving in January won’t change that, either, but it will worry Rohl ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Charles looking as though he’s been primed for the no.1 spot for the next campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday must secure the impressive youngster’s future and guarantee him game-time in the next season. A Premier League move may see Charles playing as second-fiddle for a few more years yet.
