Sheffield Wednesday are ready to bolster one position following the arrival of Ike Ugbo.
Sheffield Wednesday headed into the January transfer window looking to bolster their ranks, in a bid to keep their place in the Championship for a further year.
The Owls have already confirmed the arrival of James Beadle from Brighton, before Ike Ugbo joined on loan shortly after.
The striker, who spent the last six months with Cardiff City, arrives to a squad that have really been lacking in goals in the first half of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday have since been linked with the likes of Conor Coventry and Isaac Hayden, but have so far failed to land a new midfielder.
With Tyreeq Bakinson joining Charlton, John Buckley returning to Blackburn Rovers and Jeff Hendrick potentially making his way back to Tyneside, it comes as no surprise that The Owls are still searching for new additions.
According to The Star, Danny Rohl is looking for a ‘mobile number six’ to improve his midfield options in the final weeks of the January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday failed in their attempt to sign Conor Coventry, with the 23-year-old instead choosing to join Tyreeq Bakinson at The Valley. Meanwhile, Hayden remains on their radar but is said to be of interest to the likes of West Brom and Middlesbrough.
The Yorkshire outfit are running out of time and options to add to their midfield before deadline day, with increasing competition making it hard for the club to compete financially.
What does the future of Sheffield Wednesday’s midfield look like?
Sheffield Wednesday could face an even bigger midfield mess in the summer though, with Jeff Hendrick (loan), Will Vaulks, George Byers, Barry Bannan and Momo Diaby (loan) all potentially leaving at the end of their contracts.
While highly unlikely, if The Owls failed to extend any of their contracts, Rohl wouldn’t have a single central midfielder on his books – unless the club opted to exercise the option of a further year in Bakinson’s deal.
It was revealed earlier this week that, while many assumed Bakinson would leave in the summer, Sheffield Wednesday do have the option to keep him at Hillsborough for another 12 months.
However, it would be a surprise if the 25-year-old ended up staying at the club considering his lack of game time. It seems the only reason they would choose to extend his contract is to then sell him on for a fee, rather than losing him for free in six months.
