Sheffield Wednesday have faced a stumbling block in their pursuit of Conor Coventry.
Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer window is well and truly underway, having already signed goalkeeper James Beadle and Troyes striker Ike Ugbo this week.
The Owls are continuing to overhaul their squad this month and have already been heavily linked with a move for Conor Coventry.
The 23-year-old – who has one Premier League appearance to his name in six years with West Ham’s first team – was in talks over a permanent move to Hillsborough.
However, recent reports have claimed that negotiations have stalled as Charlton Athletic have now joined the race for his signature.
The London-born midfielder is thought to be pushing for a move close to home, meaning Sheffield Wednesday may find themselves behind in their pursuit.
It may be bad news for The Owls, but thankfully there is still plenty of time and plenty of other options to bolster their squad in January.
Here are three midfielders that Sheffield Wednesday could sign instead…
Myles Peart-Harris
Myles Peart-Harris is already one player who is being targeted by Sheffield Wednesday, with the Championship club reportedly eager to take him on loan until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old joined Brentford from Chelsea in 2021 and enjoyed a successful loan spell with Forest Green Rovers last season, netting six goals in all competitions.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank clearly rates Peart-Harris highly, calling him ‘very talented’ and ‘exciting’.
The Dane also said: “We see him playing as an ‘eight’ in our system and he fits the position profile perfectly for that. He is a dynamic midfield player, and he drives forward with the ball.
“Myles has great quality on the ball. He can score goals and deliver assists for us. He is great at arriving in the penalty area at the right time. There is also lots of development potential for our coaches to work with. We think there will be lots of areas where he will get better, particularly defensively, but he has some great attributes, and we believe we can maximise his potential.”
Joe Hodge
Currently the captain of Republic of Ireland U21s, Joe Hodge made six appearances in the Premier League last season.
The midfielder has only featured once in the Carabao Cup this term though and he has since admitted that he would like to leave on loan.
As per The Irish Examiner, Hodge said: “I need to get myself back on my feet as things have not fallen my way due to injuries.
“I want to go out on loan. I am speaking to people and I am waiting to see what comes up and what options I have. I want to play as high as I can.
“I definitely want to get out there as soon as soon as I can. Obviously I want to play football and hopefully something will happen.”
Gavin Kilkenny
Definitely the most experienced of the three, Gavin Kilkenny has been with Bournemouth since 2016.
The 23-year-old made his senior debut in 2019 and made 14 appearances as the Cherries won promotion from the Championship during the 2021-22 campaign.
Kilkenny then spent last season on loan with Stoke City and Charlton Athletic, but has since returned to the Vitality Stadium.
The midfielder was previously linked to Birmingham City and Reading in the summer, but has remained at Bournemouth and is still awaiting his first appearance of the season.
He was most recently named on the bench for Bournemouth’s 3-0 hammering of Manchester United in December, followed by the FA Cup win over QPR on New Year’s Day.
