An interesting detail in Tyreeq Bakinson’s contract has been revealed following his loan move to Charlton Athletic.
Tyreeq Bakinson joined Sheffield Wednesday from Bristol City in 2022 but struggled to retain a regular spot in the starting line-up, making 13 starts in League One.
The midfielder’s luck didn’t improve as they were promoted to the Championship, with Bakinson managing only 38 minutes of action under Danny Rohl.
It didn’t take long for Bakinson to be linked with a move away from Hillsborough once the January window opened, and he went onto join Charlton Athletic on loan less than a later.
The 25-year-old made his debut in The Addicks’ defeat to Peterborough United at the weekend, while Sheffield Wednesday’s win over Hull City was expected to be his last outing in blue and white.
It was originally believed that Bakinson only had six months remaining on his contract with The Owls, meaning he would have likely been released at the end of the season and joined Charlton permanently, or moved elsewhere.
However, it now looks like there is still the possibility of Bakinson staying in Yorkshire.
According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday still hold the option of extending his contract by a further year if they wish.
Should Sheffield Wednesday extend Tyreeq Bakinson’s contract?
Sheffield Wednesday may be tempted to keep Tyreeq Bakinson if he has an exceptional loan spell with Charlton and they are relegated themselves.
However, the most likely scenario seems to be that The Owls would only extend his contract if they wanted to earn a fee from his exit.
If Bakinson’s stint at Charlton Athletic earns him rave reviews and plenty of interest, allowing him to leave on a free may seem like a waste.
If Sheffield Wednesday have the opportunity to rake in six-figures in the summer then it would make sense to exercise the option of a further year.
Though we could also see the contract option just ignored by Danny Rohl’s side, allowing Bakinson to leave as a free agent and potentially link back up with Charlton.
The Luton Town academy graduate’s contract situation may just depend on where Sheffield Wednesday sit in the relegation scrap towards the end of the season, as well as how likely they are to keep hold of the likes of Barry Bannan, Will Vaulks and George Byers, whose contracts will all expire this summer.
