Sheffield Wednesday look to be picking up their summer transfer business once again.
It has almost been a month since Sheffield Wednesday signed Nathaniel Chalobah – the longest they have gone without a new signing since the transfer window opened.
However, with days to go until their Championship opener, they have now been eyeing up another player to bolster their attack.
While Ike Ugbo remains a priority, it appears the Owls have instead been looking at a new winger.
Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City end pursuit of attacker
It was reported yesterday that Wednesday had joined Stoke City in making ‘contact’ with free-agent Jeremy Livolant, who has recently left Bordeaux.
The 26-year-old netted five goals and provided four assists in Ligue 2 last term before they filed for bankruptcy.
TEAMtalk then reported that the Potters were close to signing Livolant, however journalist Darren Witcoop has now claimed a deal is ‘off’.
That doesn’t mean Wednesday will now move in though, with Witcoop writing on X: “Deal with Stoke is off and with an ongoing injury I can’t see any other club moving for Livolant.”
The Frenchman picked up four goal contributions in Bordeaux’s final three matches, but must have picked up an injury over the summer and that could be why Wednesday hadn’t pushed any further in their pursuit.
The Owls need to focus on three key positions
Livolant certainly isn’t a big loss for Danny Rohl’s side, who have already signed Olaf Kobacki and Jamal Lowe.
Wednesday now have a long list of players who can play out wide and arguably don’t need to be strengthening that position any further.
The Yorkshire outfit should be prioritising a striker, a central midfielder and a centre-back now, but will need to work fast if they want to pick up some new signings before they have already played several matches.
Ugbo appears to be closing in on a move back to the club which is brilliant news, but there has been very little talk on any movement further down the pitch.
Rohl has previously admitted that he wants to add a new midfielder and defender, but he certainly doesn’t seem to be in any rush to do so.
The German coach will have to hope that Chalobah and Barry Bannan don’t struggle with any early fitness issues due to their lack of squad depth – especially given that the former only started seven games last season.
