Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a £2.5million fee for Ike Ugbo, but could now miss out to a Championship rival.

Sheffield Wednesday want to re-sign Ike Ugbo in this summer’s transfer window.

Ugbo, 25, joined the Owls on loan from Troyes last January, going on to score seven goals in 18 Championship outings as Wednesday achieved safety.

Since, there’s been a lot of back and forth over whether or not Ugbo returns to Hillsborough this summer, with multiple clubs thought to be in the race, including several Championship sides.

Recently, Joe Crann tipped Sheffield Wednesday to sign Ugbo this summer, one way or another, after it was claimed that Troyes wanted £4.5million for the Canadian international.

Now though, it’s been revealed that Sheffield Wednesday have in fact agreed a £2.5million fee with Troyes for Ugbo.

But a deal is far from done, and uncertainty over the structure of the deal has allowed a Championship rival to enter the transfer chase.

Sunderland move ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in Ike Ugbo transfer chase

Journalist Alex Miller has revealed on X that Sheffield Wednesday ‘have agreed’ a £2.5million deal to sign Ugbo this summer.

However, according to Miller, the ‘payment structure’ is proving to be an obstacle for Troyes.

Miller adds that ‘Sunderland have now edged in on talks’ to sign Ugbo this summer and that the Black Cats may be slightly ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in the race for his signature.

Earlier this summer, Sunderland were linked with Danny Rohl, following the north-east club’s disappointing 16th place finish in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday must keep an eye on one striker target after Ike Ugbo latest

Sheffield Wednesday were poised for either elation or heartbreak where a move for Ugbo was concerned, and now it’s looking like the latter may be more probable.

But there’s still plenty of time in the window and with Sheffield Wednesday clearly ready to spend on a striker, there’s every chance that a marquee name will arrive.

Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in Sory Kaba at Las Palmas and it was recently revealed that a £1.3million bid was accepted for the striker.

Given this latest Ugbo news, it seems unlikely that Sheffield Wednesday would also have an offer on the table for Kaba as well.

But if the Owls miss out on Ugbo then they should quickly turn their attentions to Kaba as a cheaper alternative, then having some money left over for other potential signings this summer.
