One Sheffield Wednesday star could now see his contract cancelled in a bid to get him off the books before 11pm tomorrow night.
The January transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Thursday night, and for Sheffield Wednesday, it’ll mark the end of a very difficult window.
It’s been Danny Rohl‘s first as a manager and his first at Sheffield Wednesday, though it may not be a memorable one with just two signings to his name as things stand.
There’s been plenty of players linked but many have opted to move elsewhere, highlighting a big problem that Rohl has in trying to entice players to Hillsborough.
But there’s some irons in the fire with Wednesday still working on a deal for striker Duncan McGuire. And the club could also offload some names in a bid to bring others in.
George Byers could see his Sheffield Wednesday contract cancelled
One players tipped to potentially leave tomorrow is George Byers.
The midfield favourite hasn’t featured in any of the last five now and reports this week have revealed that he’s available to leave the club before the window shuts.
And now, The Star are reporting some fresh information on the situation; they say that Byers has interest from the Championship, League One, and even Germany, and that a loan exit could also materialise.
More interestingly, the same report adds that a permanent exit for Byers would need Sheffield Wednesday and the purchasing club to come to some sort of agreement wherein Byers’ current contract is cancelled, as clubs would be reluctant to spend on a player who is out of contract in six months.
Blackpool and Barnsley are among the teams linked with a move for the 27-year-old Byers.
Poor planning means poor outcomes
Having to let Byers go now, for nothing, seems like a very bizarre outcome.
If Wednesday aren’t going to claim anything for him now, then it would surely make more sense to just keep him at the club as a back up player for the remainder of the season.
But it’s a result of poor planning from the club.
Sheffield Wednesday have been allowed to get to a point where they have a number of key first-team players all out of contract in the same summer.
Regardless of whether or not this season ends in survival, the upcoming summer will be a huge rebuilding job for Rohl and co, with the Sheffield Wednesday first-team squad already lacking in quality.
Byers might not be the only one who leaves in the next 48 hours. But Rohl and indeed the Sheffield Wednesday fans will be hoping to see a couple of new players arriving, at the very least.
