One Sheffield Wednesday midfielder could now leave the club after a transfer U-turn from the Owls.
Sheffield Wednesday look poised for some last-minute transfer activity after a rather subdued January transfer window so far.
The Owls still have just the two signings to their name this month but look as though they could make a late purchase, with Duncan McGuire a name being heavily linked.
And some names are being linked with moves away, with one being George Byers; earlier in the month it was said that Byers would be staying despite rumours of a potential Hillsborough exit, but The Star are now reporting otherwise.
At least one clubs make approach for George Byers
The Star say that Sheffield Wednesday’s stance on Byers has now ‘shifted’ and that the club are ready to listen to offers for the Scot, who joined from Swansea City in 2021.
The same report adds that ‘at least one’ club in the English Football League has approached Sheffield Wednesday with a view to discussing a deal for Byers, and that Byers could the club ‘should all three parties come to an agreement’.
Byers has made 78 total outings for the Owls, with an impressive return of 14 goals and six assists, but under Danny Rohl, Byers has fallen out of contention.
He’s not featured in any of the last five now, although three of those games he was suspended for; this season, Byers has featured 22 times in the Championship with one goal and one assist to his name, after scoring six and assisting three in 24 League One appearances last time round.
Midfielders must then be arriving at Sheffield Wednesday
With the likes of John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson having already moved on this month, Byers’ probable exit from Sheffield Wednesday must surely mean that at least one is set to arrive at the club before the transfer deadline.
Midfield options were inflated before the start of this month but if Byers leaves then it leaves Rohl with Barry Bannan, Will Vaulks, Momo Diaby, and Jeff Hendrick; an injury to one of Bannan, Vaulks, or Diaby would leave Rohl extremely light in that position.
But for the Owls, it might be a case of players having to leave before they come in, so it’s really lining up to be a frantic finale for Sheffield Wednesday.
And for the 27-year-old Byers, a move might suit him; he’s clearly a talented player at both Championship and League One level, but this new system under Rohl doesn’t seem to suit his attributes.
He could go to a top-end League One club and really improve them, though where he ends up remains to be seen right now.
