Danny Rohl told his ‘dream scenario’ for Sheffield Wednesday in January, three new signings outed

Sheffield Wednesday have just nine games left in 2024, starting with a home fixture against Cardiff City in the Championship later in November.

The mood among Sheffield Wednesday fans right now is sombre following the Steel City derby defeat against Sheffield United before the November international break.

But on the whole, the Owls are enjoying a steady season under Danny Rohl, who currently has Wednesday sitting in 15th place of the Championship table.

And Rohl has rued dropped points at Sheffield Wednesday that could easily have them in the top half of the table right now; dropped points in games against QPR and Luton Town stand out in particular.

Wednesday finish the calendar year with a trip to Preston, as they did last year where they claimed a 1-0 win at Deepdale. A similar scoreline would be much-welcomed this time round, and it would see the Owls into what needs to be another big January transfer window.

Dom Howson tells Sheffield Wednesday their ‘dream scenario’ in January

The Owls’ January business this year played a huge part in the club’s eventual 20th place finish in the Championship last season.

And with results mixed so far this season, and the Championship as tight as ever, January will once again play a key role in shaping every club’s campaign, not just Wednesday.

Posting on X, journalist Dom Howson suggested that the Owls need to ‘strengthen the spine of their team’ in January, with a new centre-back, attacking midfielder, and a striker needed.

Howson posted: “Would like to see #SWFC strengthen the spine of their team in the January window (should they get the embargo lifted).

“Still got plenty of loans to play with. The dream scenario would be signing a new CB, an attacking midfielder and a striker. Not asking for a lot, am I?!”

Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer budget revealed

As Howson points out, the Owls need to first get out of this registration embargo. But in a separate post, Howson tipped Sheffield Wednesday to get out of embargo by January next year.

Earlier in November, however, Sheffield Wednesday News revealed that Dejphon Chansiri will be quite restricted in what he can do in the January transfer window, having spent his share of money on the likes of Ike Ugbo during the summer transfer window.

So three new players, per Howson’s January transfer wish, could be very difficult for the Owls to pull off, unless of course they’re all loan deals.

Sheffield Wednesday under Rohl remain a very attractive place for Premier League teams to send their younger players, as seen with Brighton’s James Beadle, and so there’s every hope that a few loan signings in January could materialise.
