Danny Rohl has shared his stance on Marvin Johnson’s future at Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday have faced interest in a number of their players this month, with the likes of Josh Windass both linked with moves to the MLS.
It is Marvin Johnson’s future that remains an immediate concern though, with The Owls recently rejecting a £1 million bid from Ipswich Town for his signature.
The 33-year-old joined Sheffield Wednesday from Middlesbrough in 2021 and became an important player in League One, before earning himself a new contract following promotion.
Johnson struggled for game-time at the start of the campaign, but was brought back into the frame by Danny Rohl and has since made ten starts in the Championship.
Johnson’s impressive form has attracted attention from Ipswich, with the potential switch reported to be his ‘dream move’ as he looks to play in the Premier League next season.
The Tractor Boys’ pursuit of the ‘fantastic’ winger has since gone quiet, while Rohl has provided an update on his future.
Speaking to The Star, the German said: “They are still in conversation, but it is clear from my side. Honestly, to release such a player would be hard. We want to keep him, but for sure it depends.
“Everybody must now that he is a starter for our side, it is about good performance. You cannot come to Wednesday and bring nothing. If you want such a player then it means you have to invest. This is a clear message from our side that if a club want to take one of our starters then you cannot ask to do it for free. We will see what happens in the end.
“All in all, if Marvin is still part of our team and if he is still here then he will go again. He knows that a few weeks ago he was far away. I took him, I gave him self-confidence and we are very honest with each other.
“He is very thankful that I gave him the opportunity to come back and sometimes it is also important to have this relationship.”
Will Marvin Johnson leave Sheffield Wednesday?
Sheffield Wednesday could now look set to keep Marvin Johnson though, with recent reports claiming Ipswich Town are now chasing his former Middlesbrough teammate, Marc Bola.
Kieran McKenna’s side don’t look likely to match The Owls’ valuation of Johnson and may have instead turned their attention to the Samsunspor left-back.
This would be a huge relief for Sheffield Wednesday, who could really do with keeping hold of the veteran.
Johnson has been really important under Danny Rohl and his versatility up the left flank has been really useful, especially given their lack of natural left-backs.
