Danny Rohl will have been disappointed after his Sheffield Wednesday side’s draw against Cardiff City. But he may have gotten one key decision wrong.

Sheffield Wednesday fans have once again had their optimism taken away, following what was a very frustrating 1-1 draw against Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.

Following the two-week international break, Owls fans were excited by the return of football, and optimistic about hosting a struggling Cardiff side.

Despite a strong start, Wednesday conceded first. Di’Shon Bernard replied just a couple of minutes later but the Owls were frustrated in the second half, eventually drawing the game 1-1.

Sheffield Wednesday fans were critical of Shea Charles’ performance with the Northern Ireland skipper looking a bit sloppy following the international break.

But commentator John Pearson has highlighted Marvin Johnson as a talking point, and the fact that the 33-year-old may not be an out and out full-back.

Marvin Johnson claim made after Sheffield Wednesday draw vs Cardiff City

Previously, Johnson has been described as ‘undroppable’ for Sheffield Wednesday. But against Cardiff, his strengths weren’t utilised by Danny Rohl, with Johnson looking a bit restricted in the left-back position.

After full-time, co-commentator John Pearson gave his verdict on Johnson, stating that he doesn’t think the veteran defender is a full-back.

He said: “Marvin Johnson isn’t a left back. He’s a great wing back, great crosser of the ball and a great player down that side, but he was neither one nor the other today.”

Rohl has played a back-four with Johnson at left-back on a number of occasions now. But it’s never worked out for the team, or for Johnson as an individual.

It’s clear that Johnson is better as a wing-back. He gives so much to the team when he’s getting forward and Rohl may be due criticism for not playing Johnson at left wing-back every game.

What Marvin Johnson has said about his Sheffield Wednesday future

So far this season, Johnson has featured 14 times in the Championship and has two assists to his name, yet to score in the league despite scoring four in 29 last season.

The Englishman is thought to be out of contract at the end of this season. But there’s been no reports of a possible new deal for Johnson, who recently had his say on his future.

Johnson said on his Sheffield Wednesday future: “I’m open to it [signing a new deal]. I’m here and I’m enjoying my football with the gaffer and the coaching staff that are here.”

Right now, Rohl is focussing on new contracts for other players. Sheffield Wednesday want to hand Pol Valentin a new contract and were keen on a new deal for Aki Famewo too, before the defender’s injury.
