Forget Di’Shon Bernard, another Sheffield Wednesday ace badly let Danny Rohl down in Watford defeat

There was one Sheffield Wednesday defender that was far from at his best against Watford.

Sheffield Wednesday suffered a shock heavy defeat against Watford after a second half capitulation from Danny Rohl’s side saw them lose 6-2 at Hillsborough Stadium.

Barring the odd positives of Barry Bannan’s performance and Michael Smith’s goal, there was very little to take from the game except for exceptionally poor showings at the back by the Owls’ defenders.

The side were certainly not helped with the shape that Rohl set the side up with, from the ease for Watford to overrun Wednesday’s midfield, to the high line that kept being exploited.

Whilst the players weren’t helped by Rohl’s set-up, there were plenty of poor individual showings, and one in particular will have let the German boss down.

Dominic Iorfa performance for Sheffield Wednesday was a huge let down vs Watford

Sheffield Wednesday will be left licking their wounds after the defeat, and one man in particular that will be hoping to respond after such a poor showing is Dominic Iorfa.

The Owls centre-back has had bright spells in the 2024/25 Championship season, but he definitely didn’t show this against Watford, with him notably giving away one of the penalties in the defeat.

The stats don’t particularly reflect brilliantly on his performance either, as, per SofaScore, Iorfa managed to record zero tackles, blocked shots and ground duels won throughout his appearance. He also lost possession on seven different occasions during the game.

Dominic Iorfa was not alone in being culpable for Sheffield Wednesday defeat

It is very easy to pick apart Iorfa’s performance against Watford as he was certainly partly responsible for such a heavy loss, but it is clear that none of the Sheffield Wednesday defenders covered themselves in glory.

His fellow centre-back Di’Shon Bernard struggled just as much after also giving away a penalty, and joined Iorfa in not making a single tackle in the game.

Marvin Johnson and Liam Palmer were also far from being up to speed this time out, and James Beadle certainly struggled as well in-between the sticks for Sheffield Wednesday against a relentless Watford outfit.

The defence was simply just leaky on this occasion, and part of this does fall on Rohl and the fact that the midfield was so easily overrun in his set-up, but the defenders without a doubt also need to take ownership of the performance and put it right for the upcoming games.
