Dominic Iorfa is one of five players who signed new contracts at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The defender has spent the last five years at Hillsborough and made 28 appearances last season, picking up six clean sheets under Danny Rohl.

Iorfa didn’t sign a new contract until a month ago, but quickly shared his delight at committing his future to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 29-year-old is likely to slot straight into the starting line-up against Plymouth Argyle, having been trusted heavily by Rohl last term.

Iorfa heaps praise on Sheffield Wednesday head coach

Iorfa clearly has a good relationship with the head coach and has now made a big statement on him.

Speaking to The Star, he said: “Other players have mentioned it as well. For me, he’s going right to the top. He’s one of the best managers I’ve worked with, so working alongside him and his coaching staff is great.

“There’s a lot of good people around the place and seeing how we’ve done last season when he came in, the improvements the team have made, the improvements I think I’ve made under him as well, for me, when he signed a new deal it was great news. You can see the reaction from the players and the fans as well. For me, he is someone I enjoy working with.”

There is a lot riding on Danny Rohl’s shoulders this season

It’s not the first time a Wednesday player has described Rohl in this way, with both Barry Bannan and Josh Windass saying the same thing before they had even avoided relegation.

The comments coming from the players regarding Rohl has made it very clear that it is not just performances that would be affected if he was to leave.

The German is the one factor that seems to have persuaded a number of players to stay this summer, so while Rohl’s absence would maybe prevent quality players joining, it could also urge the current crop to go elsewhere.

Wednesday do seem to rely on the head coach so much after such a successful end to the campaign, but it makes it extremely concerning if he was to leave before the season ended.

If the Owls are to have any chance of reaching the play-offs or even finishing in the top half, then they need to keep hold of Rohl.

An early exit could see form, results and happiness very quickly plummet.
