Danny Rohl is yet to deliver ‘massive’ day one promise, it may cost Sheffield Wednesday play-off spot

Danny Rohl hasn’t quite delivered on one promise he made on the day he joined Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to welcome Blackburn Rovers to Hillsborough Stadium this Tuesday, with Danny Rohl’s side hoping to improve on their plucky 1-1 draw at the weekend against Preston North End.

The Owls weren’t quite able to build on their brilliant two wins on the road that fell against both Hull City and Derby County, albeit they were without the capabilities of Barry Bannan, who had to undergo an absence due to him picking up a fifth yellow card of the season away at the Rams.

Unlike the back end of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, which saw Sheffield Wednesday miraculously stay up by the skin of their teeth, the owls’ home form hasn’t quite been up to scratch so far this season, and that shows that German boss Rohl hasn’t quite managed to live up to one promise that he made when he first took over in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t been able to deliver on Danny Rohl day-one promise

The Owls currently find themselves in a respectable 9th placed position in the Championship, something that shows real improvement since Rohl took over at Sheffield Wednesday.

However, if looking at just home games in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday find themselves all the way down in 18th position, something that can’t be maintained if the Owls are aiming high for a play-off spot.

This clearly goes against one thing that he said in his first ever press conference at Sheffield Wednesday, as he said: “We have a massive fan base behind us.

“This is the goal, all the opponents come here and they have to feel ‘oh Wednesday is back’ and yeah this is the important goal for the next steps.”

It is clear that Rohl has been looking to make S6 a difficult place to go for away sides, but 13 points in 10 games at Hillsborough this season suggests otherwise.

Sheffield Wednesday home form is preventing them from play-off push

First off, Sheffield Wednesday have by no means had a bad 2024/25 Championship campaign so far, and them sitting where they are in the table is a sign of a club showing progress on the pitch.

However, Sheffield Wednesday have simply not been up to scratch when it comes to playing at Hillsborough and this is holding them back from a potentially brilliant campaign.

Whether it is the nerves of playing in front of a demanding Owls crowd, or the occasion getting to them, the Sheffield Wednesday players must get over their hump of playing at home, otherwise Rohl will never be able to deliver on one of his key promises from the start of his tenure.
