Derby County fans made their feelings known about Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan during their Championship clash on Sunday.

Particularly in the first 45 minutes of the game at Pride Park, Derby County fans could be heard hurling abuse at Sheffield Wednesday hero Barry Bannan.

Often the pantomime villain, Bannan was heckled throughout, perhaps most noticeably so when he was booked for throwing the ball away during the first half.

Sheffield Wednesday fans were critical of Bannan during the first half against Derby. But the game changed after half-time and Wednesday eventually equalised through the 35-year-old Bannan, who on his birthday curled one into the top corner from range.

Jamal Lowe scored an injury time winner for Sheffield Wednesday on what proved to be another memorable away day for Danny Rohl’s side, and for the Owls faithful who once again packed out the away end.

Barry Bannan responds to Derby County abuse after Sheffield Wednesday win

Speaking to Football Heaven after the game, Bannan gave his thoughts on the abuse he received from Debry County supporters during the game.

He said: “I had a personal bee in my bonnet at half-time. The Derby fans were battering me in the first half, got me booked, which I think, I miss the next game, maybe, so I had a personal vendetta in the second half, to come out and try and do something special.

“I enjoyed my spell here, as well, when I was here when I was younger. So it was a bit weird that they were booing me and hammering me to be honest, so hence why the celebration was so dramatic.

“When fans give you it, you want to give a bit back.”

Bannan later added: “I thought I’d be alright here today, but obviously not. But like I said, I’ve got the last laugh.”

Barry Bannan’s stats for Derby County during 2008/09 loan spell

As a youngster at Aston Villa, Bannan was sent on loan to Derby County during the second half of the 2008/09 Championship season.

It was his first ever loan spell and he made 10 Championship appearances for the Rams, scoring once and assisting once.

Now in his ninth season at Hillsborough, Bannan need not worry about what other clubs’ fans think of him, especially when he’s scoring goals like the one he did at Pride Park on Sunday.
