One Sheffield Wednesday man surely deserves a start against Watford after his recent showing vs Brentford.

Sheffield Wednesday are gearing up for a home clash against Watford, where they will be hoping to replicate a solid showing in the EFL Cup against Brentford, which saw Danny Rohl’s side take a strong Premier League outfit to penalties.

The Owls will be hoping that several of the players are able to follow suit from the midweek defeat, including a solid showing by Max Lowe, who slotted in well to an unconventional left centre-back position for him, where he was able to deal with the threat of Bryan Mbuemo to a respectable extent.

There is another Sheffield Wednesday player who was phenomenal in the defeat that was decided on penalties, and it brings up a concern that he surely can’t do much more to earn a start for Rohl’s side in the Championship.

Callum Paterson deserves Championship start for Sheffield Wednesday after performance vs Brentford

Sheffield Wednesday utility player Callum Paterson has been ever-present in the side for the EFL Cup this season, and the attacker, who is also capable of playing on the right flank, has bagged two goals in his four starts in Rohl’s side.

Despite his brilliant showings in the EFL Cup, which was continued against Brentford, with his performances being described as a ‘classic’, per The Star, he is still yet to be handed a single start in the Championship, and has amassed just eight minutes of action in the league across three substitute appearances.

Per SofaScore, Paterson was solid defensively against Brentford, where he notched six clearances, two tackles and one blocked shot. He also managed to win five out of eight aerial duels.

There is very little more that Paterson can do at this point to earn a start for the side, and whilst many may suggest that he is perhaps more effective from off-the bench, he has denounced that after four consecutive top showings away from the league.

Danny Rohl must sway away from out-of-form Wednesday man

Paterson’s offering of versatility and the ability to play in several positions, as well as his recent cup form, should certainly be enough for him to earn a start for the Owls in their upcoming game against Watford.

If that doesn’t quite fit the bill for the German boss, then one factor that should sway his decision towards Paterson is the inconsistent form of several of the Sheffield Wednesday attackers, including Anthony Musaba, who really could have offered so much for to the Owls in terms of goalscoring output up until this point of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl really should have handed Paterson his first start by now, and it is incredible that he is yet to be utilised from the first minute in the Championship, but the coming weekend provides a perfect opportunity for him to do so.
