Sheffield Wednesday look as though hey could be on the verge of losing key wing-back Marvin Johnson.
It’s certainly been a whirlwind season for Johnson.
The 33-year-old started the season in Dubai; exiled by former boss Xisco Munoz for no reason whatsoever, and forced to train alone and overseas as he pondered his next steps.
Then he returned to the fold under Danny Rohl, instantly reminding everyone of his qualities having now scored three goals in 13 Championship outings.
And he’s netted some impressive goals to too with his one in the win over Hull City highlighting his attacking prowess from the left.
But Ipswich Town are now keen on signing him; they’ve had a £1million bid rejected but are expected to return for the Englishman.
Here we look at three Johnson replacements that the Owls must consider this month…
Sam Reed
Sheffield Wednesday might not have to look for for a potential replacement for Johnson.
Youngster Sam Reed is making waves in the development side and has been tipped to join the likes of Joey Phuthi and Gui Siqueira in following Bailey Cadamarteri into the Wednesday first-team.
He might not be able to have the same kind of impact as Cadamarteri, but he could certainly provide cover and competition for the likes of Reece James, presenting the Owls with a more cost-effective replacement for Johnson.
Luke Thomas
Thomas actually started the season on loan at Sheffield United from Leicester City, but he’s since returned and he’s already being linked with another loan exit.
He struggled at Bramall Kane. But Sunderland are said to be among the teams keen on signing him for the second half of the season.
Wednesday though might be a much-better fit for Thomas, who is a very progressive full-back, like Johnson; as per Sofascore, Thomas averaged 38.2 touches per game at Sheffield United, with 16.8 accurate passes and 9.2 of those coming in the opposition half.
Former Leicester City teammate James Maddison described Thomas as ‘top drawer’ last season.
Harrison Burrows
Peterborough United left-back Harrison Burrows has been one of the standout players in League One this season, having recorded two goals and seven assists from left-back for Posh.
He’s a darting full-back who loves to get up and down the wing and his nine goal contributions this season showcases his quality in the final third.
Posh are challenging for automatic promotion this season and will surely be wary of any player sales.
But the League One outfit often put their players in the shop window and if Wednesday want to start building for the future, and if they can get a good sum for Johnson, a move for the 22-year-old Burrows could be perfect.
What’s more is that the Englishman is currently out of contract in the summer.
