Another Sheffield Wednesday academy product could be in line to make his senior debut soon.
Danny Rohl dove straight into Sheffield Wednesday’s U21 set-up when he arrived at the club back in October, waiting only a matter of weeks before he handed Bailey Cadamarteri his debut.
Cadamarteri netted two goals in five appearances for the U18s in the FA Youth Cup before he was brought into the first team as an unused substitute on two occasions.
The striker went onto make his senior debut in the defeat to Millwall, before he started his first game in the 1-1 draw to Leicester.
Cadamarteri has since started every Championship match for The Owls, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the process.
Sheffield Wednesday‘s youth products will now see Cadamarteri’s success as the perfect opportunity to make a good impression themselves, and Sam Reed looks to be the next youngster to be handed his chance.
According to The Star, the 20-year-old has been called up to train with the senior squad as Rohl wants to take a closer look at him ahead of potentially handing him his debut.
Reed is said to have been a standout performer for the U21s in the early stages of the campaign, and was believed to have caught the German coach’s eye before suffering an injury that kept him out of action over Christmas.
The defender has now recovered though and is apparently involved with the first team training alongside other youngsters such as Joey Phuthi and Gui Siqueira.
Reed plies his trade at left-back, which could give him a huge advantage in his wait for senior football.
Sheffield Wednesday’s only recognised left-sided defender is Reece James, who hasn’t made an appearance for the club since November.
Rohl has regularly been using winger Marvin Johnson in that position, as well as Akin Famewo, who is naturally a centre-back.
While the pair have impressed in recent weeks, The Owls boss could still look to promote Reed in the hope that he can challenge for a place in the starting line-up like Cadamarteri.
Should Sam Reed be handed a role in the first team?
Danny Rohl’s interest in Sheffield Wednesday’s academy is very promising, especially given the excitement around Bailey Cadamarteri following his appointment three months ago.
However, it probably isn’t the time to be relying too much on these young players. Sam Reed hasn’t made his senior debut yet and no doubt will reach that point eventually, but Rohl is likely to need experience and Championship quality to avoid the club slipping down to the third tier.
Sheffield Wednesday could do much worse than to delve into the transfer market for a new left-back this month, though all the recent rumours seem to be regarding fresh faces further up the pitch.
