Danny Rohl has spoken out on Devis Vasquez’s future at Sheffield Wednesday.
Devis Vasquez joined AC Milan in January 2023 but failed to make a single appearance before he was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday six months later.
The goalkeeper was expected to challenge Cameron Dawson for his place in the starting line-up and was brought into replace the 28-year-old in August.
Vasquez made nine starts for The Owls before he was dropped following Xisco Munoz’s sacking, and he has since been unable to regain his place in the team.
With Sheffield Wednesday confirming the loan arrival of James Beadle this week, Vasquez now looks to be pushed even further down the pecking order at Hillsborough.
Danny Rohl has since admitted that the Colombian could leave Sheffield Wednesday prematurely, claiming that the club would have to make a ‘decision’ very soon.
While Vasquez’s future is still up in the air, the German has now claimed that he still has a ‘chance’ while he remains in the squad.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference yesterday (as per The Star), Rohl said: “At the moment he’s still part of our training group, but lets see what happens in the next days.
“That’s the same for all of the players, while they are part of our team they will be as a normal player with good training, good feedback, and talks like normal. That’s how I want to lead my group – be fair, give a chance, and then see what happens.”
Should Sheffield Wednesday offload Devis Vasquez?
Cameron Dawson has massively upped his game since Danny Rohl was appointed back in October, with the shot-stopper being praised for playing ‘out of his skin’.
Dawson was especially praised for his ‘star’ display in the FA Cup win over Cardiff City earlier this month, which saw him save two penalties and keep a clean sheet.
James Beadle’s arrival surely isn’t preparing for him to sit as third-choice, so Devis Vasquez’s future at the club looks very bleak – despite Rohl’s recent comments.
AC Milan may wait until they find a new club for the 25-year-old to join on loan this month before recalling him early, while The Owls may also consider terminating the deal themselves.
Vasquez’s potential exit could leave Pierce Charles to take the third-choice role in between the sticks, if they don’t sign anyone else.
The 18-year-old joined Sheffield Wednesday from Man City in 2021 and has been featuring for their U21 side as he looks to earn his senior debut.
