The Sheffield Wednesday are subject to plenty of praise this evening after a stunning 4-0 FA Cup win.
Sheffield Wednesday hosted Cardiff City for the second time in two weeks today.
It was the Welsh outfit that came out victorious in the Premier League clash before Christmas, but The Owls well and truly got their revenge in this weekend’s FA Cup third round.
The Owls came out 4-0 winners at Hillsborough with goals from Josh Windass, Romaine Sawyers (own goal), Liam Palmer and Mallik Wilks gifting the hosts a place in the fourth round draw.
It was an all-round exceptional performance from Sheffield Wednesday, but huge credit is due to Cameron Dawson.
A thrilling first seven minutes saw Sheffield Wednesday take the lead through a superb 30-yard effort from Windass, but it wasn’t long before Ryan Wintle prepared to claim an equaliser from the penalty spot.
The Owls’ defence thanked Dawson after he pulled off a brilliant save to keep it at 1-0, before Deja vu struck when he did exactly the same thing from Callum Robinson’s penalty just three minutes later.
The 28-year-old didn’t stop there though and continued to impress with some excellent saves, before picking up his fourth clean sheet of the campaign.
The Star journalist Alex Miller has now compared Dawson to Lev Yashin after his ‘star’ performance, awarding him with 9/10 rating.
Miller wrote: “Frankly, played like Lev Yashin’s Millhouses grandson. Saved two penalties within seven minutes, made a handful of point-blank saves and commanded his area nicely. The star man.”
How important is this FA Cup win?
It was comfortably one of Cameron Dawson’s best performances for Sheffield Wednesday this season, and he just capped off an excellent performance for the entire team.
The Owls will have been really frustrated when they were narrowly beaten by Cardiff last month, but today’s hammering shows exactly how quickly they have been growing and developing under Danny Rohl.
While the Premier League will remain their focus, Sheffield Wednesday can only benefit from big wins like that. They will be brimming with confidence ahead of next weekend’s trip to Southampton.
It is only more impressive that they have done this with so many absences as well.
With only three points to go until they potentially climb out of the relegation zone, there is no reason why they can’t shock the Saints. Sheffield Wednesday are at a point now where they trust in Rohl so much that there is the belief that literally anything could happen now.
