Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has hinted at the possibility of signing free agent defender Nico Schulz.
Sheffield Wednesday have had 12-cap German international Schulz training with them in recent weeks.
The former Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim, Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund man has been a free agent since his Dortmund release at the end of last season.
Schulz was recently ordered to pay a six-figure fine for a GBH charge.
But he could potentially land a deal at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the final 12 games of the season, with the Owls currently three points adrift ahead of a trip to bottom club Rotherham United this weekend.

Speaking to the press ahead of Saturday’s game at Rotherham, Rohl was quizzed on Schulz and whether or not he wanted to bring him to Hillsborough.
Rohl replied:
“Let’s have a look. This week he is not here. We will try it, that he comes back for the training as well, and then I think all in all, we will look at what we can do. If there’s a way or not. But at the moment there’s no more information.”
Schulz has won two domestic cups with Dortmund and was named in the Kicker Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2018/19, whilst playing for Hoffenheim.
A left-back by trade, Schulz has featured in both the Champions League and the Europa League, also playing in a Nations League tournament for Germany.
Schulz would add undoubted quality to Wednesday ranks
Someone with Schulz’s experience and pedigree should be playing well above the level that Sheffield Wednesday are currently at.
But it seems like there might be a genuine chance he joins; for how long remains to be seen, as a deal form now until the end of the season would be a very short one.
Be that as it may, having Schulz in the side for the final however many games would be a huge boost to the Owls’ survival hopes.
Left-backs are already thin on the ground but Rohl has Akin Famewo back in training now.
Still, Schulz’s presence could free up Famewo to provide coverage in the middle of defence, which could be preferable now with Sheffield Wednesday donning a back-five of late.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see if a move does materialise. Right now though, nothing seems imminent.
