A current free-agent has been training with Sheffield Wednesday, it has been reported.
Sheffield Wednesday have made good use of the free-agent market in recent seasons, and after a mixed January transfer window, it looks like the Owls might still be scouring the free-agents market.
Danny Rohl wanted another striker on deadline day but the recent goals of Ike Ugbo have helped to ease that particular blow.
Kristian Pedersen also arrived to bolster the left-back department. But he and Akin Famewo have picked up injuries this month, leaving Rohl short on numbers in that position.
The Sheffield Wednesday boss has already revealed that he’s looking for potential options in that position, and now he has a free-agent left-back training with his first-team.
Former German international Nico Schulz training with Sheffield Wednesday
The Star have revealed that former Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, Hertha BSC, and Hoffenheim left-back Schulz has been training with the Sheffield Wednesday first-team in recent weeks.
The 30-year-old has 12 caps for Germany but has been a free agent since his Dortmund release last summer.
But The Star say that it is unclear whether or not the Owls are looking to sign Schulz or if he’s simply training with the club to keep his fitness levels up.
Rohl and Schulz’s paths never crossed on the international set up, with Rohl arriving on the scene in 2021 and Schulz earning his last cap in 2020.
Danny Rohl could pull off Schulz coup
Bringing a player with Schulz experience to Hillsborough would be a huge coup for Rohl, even if it was just for the final 13 games of the season.
And if there’s any reason whatsoever to join Sheffield Wednesday right now, it’s Rohl.
Rohl and Schulz may be familiar with each other from their respective times in German football and that may well be the reason why Schulz is training with the club.
Although it seems like a big change going from Dortmund to a relegation-fighting Sheffield Wednesday, and with Schulz reportedly facing issues off the field, a temporary move to South Yorkshire does appear very unlikely.
Though it could be a sign of what could potentially come in the summer.
If Sheffield Wednesday stay up and Rohl stays at the club, then Wednesday could be a very attractive club for a lot of free agents, especially ones coming from Germany as they’ll have the Rohl connection.
The Owls are back in action against Bristol City this weekend; a win here could lift Sheffield Wednesday to within one point of safety, depending on how Millwall get on away at Southampton.
