Sheffield Wednesday have been handed an injury boost ahead of their crunch match vs Rotherham United this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday make the short trip across South Yorkshire to face bottom club Rotherham United this weekend.

The Millers are now 16 points adrift and 13 behind Sheffield Wednesday after a run of six-straight defeats, with just one win since October.

The Owls meanwhile have won three out of their last four and now sit just three points from safety, beating Bristol City 2-1 in their last outing.

Akin Famewo ‘back in training’ ahead of Rotherham United clash

Akin Famewo, 25, has missed the last three for Sheffield Wednesday with a muscle injury.

But journalist Joe Crann has now revealed on X that Famewo is ‘back in training’; though whether or not he’s fit enough to return to the side this weekend remains to be seen.

Famewo has largely played at left-back this season.

Under both Xisco Munoz and Danny Rohl, the former Norwich City man has been seen as more of a left-sided defender than a central one.

Though Marvin Johnson now has that spot locked down, but with January arrival Kristian Pedersen still sidelined, Famewo’s eventual return to action will provide Rohl with some much-needed coverage on the left.

Famewo return just time in for Sheffield Wednesday run-in

Sheffield Wednesday now have 12 games standing between them and the end of the season.

So Rohl and co have 12 games to make up what is currently a three-point gap to safety, and salvage their Championship status for another year.

And having Famewo back will be a huge boost to the Owls’ survival hopes.

Right now, Johnson has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to stay fit, because if he gets injured then Rohl has no fit left-backs.

What’s more is that Johnson is more of a left wing-back, playing on the left of a back-five in recent weeks.

Famewo though may be better suited when playing on the left of a back-four, so his return gives Rohl more flexibility with the shape.

And with few centre-backs to call upon other than the three who started the last game; Di’Shon Bernard, who is suspended for this weekend, Michael Ihiekwe, and Liam Palmer, having someone with Famewo’s versatility for the run-in will be key.

So all round, Famewo returning to training and soon returning to action is a real boost for the Owls and Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday’s game against neighbours Rotherham United kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, and expect Rohl to have a close eye on Stoke City’s game at home to Middlesbrough, QPR away at Leicester City, and Millwall at home to Watford.
