Sheffield Wednesday earned a 2-1 win over Bristol City today, but they’ve been a dealt a new player blow in the process.
Sheffield Wednesday now find themselves three points from safety after another incredible win in the Championship.
The Owls beat Bristol City 2-1 with Ike Ugbo scoring both goals at Hillsborough, though wins for QPR and Millwall keep Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd.
Danny Rohl‘s side limped over the line with a man less in the end, after Di’Shon Bernard picked up a second yellow card in the second half.
Many might argue that Bernard was lucky to be on the pitch with his first yellow card in the first half being rather cynical.
Di’Shon Bernard set to miss Rotherham United crunch match
Bernard, 23, has now featured 27 times in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday this season.
Rohl is keen on keeping Bernard at the club beyond his contract expiry this summer, and whilst today wasn’t his finest performance in blue and white, he remains a key player in the XI.
His red card today will see him suspended for one game; the short trip to bottom club Rotherham United next weekend.
The Millers were leading against QPR this afternoon but went on to lose 2-1, having now lost their last six in the Championship, with one win in all competitions since October.
Bambo Diaby set for rare Sheffield Wednesday chance
Throughout the first half of the season, Spanish centre-back Bambo Diaby was a mainstay in the XI.
And despite some mixed performances, he kept his place in the starting line up until a horror performance in the 4-0 defeat vs Southampton last month prompted Rohl to drop the 26-year-old.
Now with Bernard suspended and the likes of Akin Famewo still sidelined, Diaby may now be in line for a rare start; it’d be his first start since that Southampton game.
Having stuck with a back-five again today, and with similar results after the 2-0 win vs Millwall, expect Rohl to be reluctant to change shape despite the absence of Bernard.
Many fans might be wary of Diaby coming into the XI for such a huge game away at Rotherham United, though the centre-back will surely be relishing the opportunity to show everyone what he’s really capable of.
There was a period through December when Diaby was looking much better. But after the turn of the year he lost all form and is rarely seen now.
