Sheffield Wednesday fans were really excited about Svante Ingelsson when he signed in the summer. But it’s so far been a very mixed season for the Swede.

There was a lot of hype around Svante Ingelsson when he arrived at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer transfer window.

He joined on a free transfer from German second tier side Hansa Rostock and has since featured 12 times in the Championship, starting seven times and claiming just one assist.

Ingelsson impressed on his Sheffield Wednesday debut against Plymouth on the opening day, showcasing his physical traits and ball-carrying ability in midfield.

But that has since proved to be his best game for Danny Rohl’s side. Ingelsson has been in and out of the XI whilst also playing in an unfamiliar left attacking midfield role more often than not.

Going into the season, Rohl said Ingelsson would be a box-to-box midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday. That was, until, the arrival of Shea Charles, who’s now a nailed on starter for Wednesday.

Danny Rohl’s honest verdict on Svante Ingelsson at Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Rohl was asked about Ingelsson and his current situation in the first-team squad.

Rohl spoke honestly about the 26-year-old, explaining: “For Svante, it’s a new league. It’s a new manager. I think his positions is between six, eight, and 10, and sometimes he travels all over the pitch.

“We know what we get from him: a physical, strong side, powerful deep runs, different profile.

“Look for example, when he played against Norwich, he did a fantastic job, because the task was working against the ball, and he could bring his strengths in.

“In other games, you think you have more ball possession, and the spaces are tighter and smaller, then maybe for him, it’s not always the best game.

“For him it’s now, keep going. He’s improved. He’s a great character. He worked hard. He takes this as a challenge.”

Sheffield Wednesday update spells bad news for Svante Ingelsson

Ingelsson has already struggled for gametime in the Championship this season. And the returning Nathaniel Chalobah will surely make gametime even harder to come by.

Chalobah made his Sheffield Wednesday debut against Derby County last weekend. The former England man looked good, too, and Rohl thinks Chalobah can become an important player in the remainder of the season.

Ingelsson has so far endured a quite rocky start to life in the Championship. We’ve definitely seen glimpses of a player with great ability, and the attributes to match the very physical Championship, but we need to see some consistency from him.

He’ll no doubt get his chances. When they come, he really needs to take them.
