Sky Sports pundits Curtis Davies and Clinton Morrison discussed Sheffield Wednesday’s top six chances in the Championship on Tuesday night.

The pair were pundits for Sheffield Wednesday’s Carabao Cup Fourth Round clash at Brentford on Tuesday night, which proved to be a quite enthralling game.

Brentford looked to be in cruise control at half-time where they held a 1-0 lead. But Djeidi Gassama struck from range to stun the hosts and eventually take the game to penalties.

Sheffield Wednesday lost the shoot-out 5-4 with Liam Palmer missing what was the 10th penalty of the evening.

It leaves Danny Rohl free to focus on the Championship now, which by his starting XI at Brentford is clearly his priority this season.

The Owls now find themselves in 13th place of the Championship table after Sheffield Wednesday’s comeback win at Portsmouth last weekend.

Up next is a game against Watford at Hillsborough this weekend.

Sky Sports pundits rate Sheffield Wednesday’s top six chances in the Championship

Going into this season, hopes of a play-off push were high. Then after Sheffield Wednesday thumped Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the opening day, these hopes were locked in.

They quickly fell apart though, following what’s been a very mixed run of form since. But the last few performances have been solid, with the Pompey win and the Brentford game showing us enough to suggest that there might be an outside chance of the top six.

And that’s exactly what Sky Sports pundit Curtis Davies suggested. He said before the Brentford game on Tuesday: “Moving forward, they [Sheffield Wednesday] are looking good.

“But it’s how much further they can go, and I think this year if anything, the Championship isn’t that strong.

“So if they’re going to have a chance it’s going to be this year.”

Former Owls striker Clinton Morrison added: “Curtis is right, they’ve got a good outside chance of finishing in that top six this season.”

Danny Rohl knows Sheffield Wednesday are still outsiders in the Championship

Speaking before the game, Rohl revealed that his side are 5th in the 2024 Championship table.

It’s certainly impressive, and certainly reason to believe that a top six finish is possible this season.

But in fans’ minds and likely in Rohl’s mind too, a credible promotion push still seems a long way off.

Speaking earlier this season, Rohl said that he has a clear idea of what he wants to do in the next two transfer windows, suggesting that he still thinks this Owls’ first-team squad is way off where it needs to be.

Rohl said: “Even the next window, it’s a little bit far away, but even now I have clear idea in my mind what we have to do in the next two windows.”

Sheffield Wednesday against Watford kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
