Danny Rohl made wholesale changes to his Sheffield Wednesday starting XI for the Carabao Cup defeat at Brentford on Tuesday night.

Only Max Lowe and Anthony Musaba kept their spots in the Sheffield Wednesday XI for the game at Brentford.

Danny Rohl rung the changes, heavily suggesting that his focus is firmly on the Championship.

But a makeshift Sheffield Wednesday side took Brentford right to penalties. The Owls scored an equaliser in the second half through Djeidi Gassama and went right down to the final penalty.

Liam Palmer missed the 10th penalty of the shoot-out. But there were so many positives for Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday fans to take from that performance.

Danny Rohl explains Barry Bannan absence and reveals Yan Valery concern

Before the game, fans were wondering why Barry Bannan wasn’t in the matchday squad, with the Owls skipper having come off the bench in all three Carabao Cup games prior to the Brentford game.

But speaking before kick off, Rohl revealed that Bannan, along with Shea Charles and James Beadle were being rested.

However, Rohl did reveal a calf problem for Yan Valery. Rohl told Sky Sports before the game: “Today was a difficult one to decide. We left Barry at home. He’s played a lot of games and we have the game next Saturday.

“I think Shea also, he played a lot for the international team as well. We changed James Beadle our no.1 but we have a good one with Pierce.

“Yan Valery also a little bit of problems with the calf.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s injury list in full after Yan Valery update

Rohl didn’t seem too fazed by Valery’s calf issue and so we shouldn’t assume that the Tunisian international is sidelined as such, but more being rested like Bannan, Charles, and Beadle.

But Valery is another concern to be be kept an eye on, with Akin Famewo the main absentee in defence.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to be without Famewo for a while after the defender was forced off against Portsmouth last week with a thigh injury.

Elsewhere, Olaf Kobacki is also injured for Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl says he could be sidelined for up to two months.

Nathaniel Chalobah remains sidelined, with Rohl previously suggesting that Chalobah could return for Sheffield Wednesday around the time of the November international break.
