Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu has announced his retirement from football.

Atdhe Nuhiu has called time on a 19-year professional playing career which has seen him play in several countries, including Austria, Cyprus, Turkey, and of course, England.

The 35-year-old memorably played for Sheffield Wednesday between 2013 and 2020, scoring 50 goals and assisting 27 more in 277 total appearances for the Owls.

Former Kosovan international Nuhiu has spent the last two-and-a-half years with Rheindorf Altach in the Austrian Bundesliga where he scored 20 in 95 total games.

Nuhiu left Hillsborough as a free agent. But he left behind him some great memories with fans often citing his goals and performances on social media to this day.

Announcing his retirement on Monday, Sheffield Wednesday fans reacted in their droves, with former players even getting in the action too.

One of whom was skipper Barry Bannan who played alongside Nuhiu for several seasons.

Barry Bannan makes Atdhe Nuhiu prediction

Bannan, who signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract in the summer, has been in fine form of late.

His two goals and one assist in September saw him nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award, as well as the Goal of the Month award for his strike against QPR.

Reacting to the news of Nuhiu’s retirement on Instagram, Bannan predicted that the big striker could one day become a top coach or manager.

Bannan wrote: “What a guy and will be a top manager or coach I’m sure of this.”

Could Atdhe Nuhiu return to Sheffield Wednesday as a coach one day

There’s certainly no doubting Nuhiu’s popularity among fans; he was a player who gave his everything on the pitch, scoring some big goals during some troubling times in S6.

He’s enjoyed a prolific career on the whole. But he’ll no doubt take a break from the game now, and figure out his next steps.

With Bannan predicting a coaching role for Nuhiu, it could suggest that that’s been the plan for Nuhiu all along.

And a return to S6 would be an exciting one for sure. But Danny Rohl’s backroom team is already large, with a specific type of coach having been brought in.

Rohl appears to like coaches with similar ‘elite’ backgrounds as him, with coaches focusing very specifically on things like psychology or set-pieces for example.

Whilst Nuhiu returning to Sheffield Wednesday would be exciting, it doesn’t seem like much of a possibility.
