Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has had his say on one key mistake from his side vs Burnley.

The Owls were undone in a 2-0 defeat at Hillsborough Stadium against Burnley.

It was a defeat that brought about its positives for Danny Rohl’s side to build on ahead of the upcoming Championship game against Swansea City, including another solid showing from Barry Bannan and Shea Charles in the centre-of-the-park, whilst James Beadle also proved to be brilliant in-between the sticks.

The attacking output from the Owls in S6 was quite simply not up to scratch, with Ike Ugbo in particular missing a big opportunity to give his side the lead in the opening stanza, however Rohl’s side will thankfully be boosted by the returning Josh Windass for the upcoming game against Swansea City in the midweek.

One other costly error, which led to a goal, was the defensive mistake courtesy of summer signing Yan Valery, who was at fault for Burnley’s opener, and has since received stick for his performance, which has been responded to by Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl.

Danny Rohl has his say on Yan Valery mistake for Sheffield Wednesday vs Burnley

Sheffield Wednesday will be left to reflect on their defensive errors, with Valery’s sticking out as a clear turning point for the Owls.

It involved a mis-hit clearance from a ball over the top, which helped play Jaidon Anthony in on goal, which he converted past Beadle.

The mistake has been addressed by Rohl, who said, per The Star: “It happens. It is football and it happens.

“It can happen in every position and if it happens in the last line it can be a big chance for the opponent or a conceded goal. If you miss a chance in front there is often another one, the outcome is not the same as in defence.

“We just move on. It is not now that he is out or anything like this, no. We know this as a team.”

Sheffield Wednesday must make decision over where to play Yan Valery

It would be understandable to suggest that Valery was somewhat shoehorned into a back three, where he isn’t as used to playing in comparison to at wing-back, and it shows that whilst some of Rohl’s gambles in regards to players in alternative positions sometimes work, this one didn’t.

Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl have had a difficult job up until this point in regards to player availability, particularly in regards to their defence, and it certainly would have been cruel to drop Pol Valentin after his brilliant performance vs Coventry City.

It would have made more sense for the German boss to slot in Liam Palmer as the final piece of the back-three, as the utility player has often looked comfortable in this position, and there is no doubt that Rohl may feel like that sort of mistake would not have taken place with the Sheffield Wednesday vice-captain.
