Sheffield Wednesday secured a huge victory over table-topping West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
It has been a tough start to the 2024/25 Championship season for Danny Rohl and his first-team squad.
Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the opening weekend of the campaign, seemingly signaling the Owls would enjoy a much better season this time around after only just avoiding relegation in 2023/24.
However, after losing 2-1 versus Luton Town last weekend, the Yorkshire outfit had slipped down to 22nd in the Championship table ahead of Saturday.
West Bromwich Albion were predicted to beat Sheffield Wednesday prior to kick-off at Hillsborough – a fair assumption given the Baggies were undefeated after six Championship fixtures.
However, Wednesday played some of their best football of the season so far to secure a major victory over Carlos Corberan’s side.
And one player has come in for particularly high praise for his showing on Saturday.

Marvin Johnson was ‘terrific’ during Sheffield Wednesday vs West Bromwich Albion
A number of Sheffield Wednesday stars impressed over the course of the 90 minutes on Saturday.
After a solid showing against Luton last week, Barry Bannan was once again in fine form versus West Brom.
Bannan was a real threat going forward and made a nuisance of himself defensively as well. He got the assist for the winner and the opener.
However, it was Marvin Johnson who has now come in for heavy praise from one journalist for his display on Saturday.
Rohl was keen to stretch West Brom’s backline, ensuring both of his wing-backs were pushed far out wide.
This allowed Johnson plenty of space to run in behind and was key to him getting the opening goal, which has since been credited as an own goal.
Despite not getting credit for the strike, journalist Dom Howson took to X/Twitter during the clash to lavish praise on the defender, who he thinks is ‘terrific’.
He wrote: “Johnson has done a terrific job so far to keep Fellows quiet. He’s a quality winger at this level.”
Marvin Johnson form is bad news for one Sheffield Wednesday player
The 33-year-old started the 2024/25 campaign as a fringe option, playing backup to Max Lowe.
But following Lowe’s struggles in the first few games of the campaign, the former Middlesbrough ace was brought back into the starting line-up by Rohl.
Johnson performed very well on his return to the side and despite losing against Luton, the left-back looked solid.
Now, after another superb showing against West Brom from Johnson, Lowe will surely be fearing for his future at Hillsborough.
Big things were expected of the ex-Sheffield United man after his controversial transfer during the 2024 summer transfer window.
But he has so far failed to deliver and it is now hard to see how or when the defender will return to the eleven.
Wednesday’s next league fixture is away to Bristol City on October 2nd but it is likely to be Johnson, not Lowe, who starts out on the left of the back five.
