Sheffield Wednesday are in the race to sign an exciting Premier League attacker on loan in the January transfer window.

In the build up to the January transfer window, Danny Rohl has made his transfer plans at Hillsborough crystal clear.

The Owls boss has said on multiple occasions now that Sheffield Wednesday will target loan signings in January, more specifically Premier League loan signings.

Rohl is keen to add that extra bit of quality to his side as Sheffield Wednesday’s fortunes in the Championship this season remain somewhat mixed.

A strong 2-0 win at Hull City in midweek leaves the Owls in a very comfortable 13th place of the Championship table. But there’s still just seven points standing between Wednesday and the bottom three and so the club needs a good January to keep themselves competitive.

Last January, Sheffield Wednesday made great use of the loan market, signing James Beadle, Ike Ugbo, and Ian Poveda on loan, and all three made huge a impact in the second half of the campaign.

There’s now a new, potential January loan signing in Wednesday’s sights: Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry.

Sheffield Wednesday linked with Aston Villa gem Louie Barry

Aston Villa youngster Barry, 21, is currently on loan at Stockport County in League One where he’s been in prolific form this season.

The left-winger, who can also play as a no.9, has already scored 13 goals in 17 League One appearances this season, scoring twice in the Hatters’ last league win away at Burton Albion.

It was recently revealed that Villa could recall the Englishman in January and send him on loan to a Championship club for the second half of the season.

Now, journalist Alex Miller has revealed on X that Sheffield Wednesday are ‘keeping an eye’ on Barry, with the Owls one of several Championship clubs looking to strike a January deal for the former West Brom academy man.

Louie Barry’s career so far

Barry is certainly enjoying a strong season, with his 13 League One goals this season making him the top scorer in the third tier.

He began his career with West Brom. He then sealed a shock move to Barcelona in 2019, spending a year there before joining Aston Villa in 2020.

Barry has so far spent time on loan at Ipswich Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons, Salford City, and Stockport.

And it’s at Stockport where he’s really shone; Barry helped the Hatters to promotion from League Two last season, joining in January and scoring nine times in League Two.

This season, he’s taken his game to the next level. A Championship loan move in January would be representative of his current trajectory, though with so many teams interested, it
won’t be an easy January pursuit for the Owls.
