Danny Rohl has explained why Sheffield Wednesday no longer want to sign Nico Schulz.
Danny Rohl’s connections with the Germany national team, as well as former clubs RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, were very well known at Hillsborough.
However, it still came as a surprise when it was reported last month that former Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schulz was training at Middlewood Road with the senior team.
The 30-year-old had spent his career in Germany with Hertha Berlin, Borussia Monchengladbach, Hoffenheim and Dortmund, as well as making a number of appearance for the national team under Rohl.
The 34-year-old coach then suggested he would like to sign Schulz on a free transfer, claiming he would ‘look at what we can do’ as he continued to train with the Championship outfit.
Sheffield Wednesday were hit with criticism over the potential move though, with the defender charged with three counts of Grevous Bodily Harm against a former partner.
Wednesday’s Women’s Supporters Group had penned an open letter to Rohl, urging him not to sign Schulz.
The Owls manager has now revealed that Schulz won’t be returning to Sheffield and has explained exactly why.
Speaking to The Star after last night’s win over Plymouth, Rohl said: “I’d not normally speak after a game about a player who is not here, that’s not in my mind, but I have made a final decision… I’ve said before with transfers that I always look to the whole picture, and that was the same in this case.
“I’m very happy with my team here, I know Kristian Pedersen will come back soon, and that’s the reason why I will stay with my squad… Nico Schulz will not be coming.”
Should Sheffield Wednesday have signed Nico Schulz?
While Nico Schulz would have clearly been a big name for a club battling relegation, it certainly didn’t seem worth it.
The German’s arrival would have caused a lot of agro amongst supporters, and he arguably wouldn’t have even got straight into the team due to the brilliant form of Marvin Johnson.
Sheffield Wednesday seem much better off waiting to the summer for him to bring his own signings in that will depend on which league we are in. There is currently no concern over that left-back spot, so they have probably made the sensible decision in avoiding that transfer.
