Sheffield Wednesday have already offloaded two players this month. But many more look set to follow.
John Buckley returned to parent club Blackburn Rovers before Tyreeq Bakinson joined Charlton Athletic on loan, kickstarting Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer.
Danny Rohl has also brought in two new players; James Beadle on loan from Brighton and Ike Ugbo on loan from Troyes.
And we look set to see some more comings and goings over the next few weeks, though right now there’s more talks of potential player exits.
Jeff Hendrick, Michael Smith, and Lee Gregory are three tipped to leaves Hillsborough this month.
And speaking before the Southampton game yesterday, Rohl revealed that Sheffield Wednesday have received offers for players this month.
He told The Star:
“There are offers for our players. You can see some players attract good offers because other clubs see how our improvement is and this is a good signal for us. The players in the past were maybe not on this level and now they are. It is good. We will change our squad in the next weeks for sure because as you bring players in it is not possible to play every player at the same time, you will have some movement.”
Sheffield Wednesday exits seem inevitable
It’s inevitable that Sheffield Wednesday offload some players this month, and it may be inevitable who leaves.
A new central midfielder seems like a key priority right now following links to the likes of Conor Coventry and Darko Gyabi, so that could mean that Hendrick returning to Newcastle United is a move that goes through.
And Rohl has said on multiple occasions that a striker is a priority for this month’s transfer window, so it seems highly likely that one of Smith or Gregory leaves; Gregory seems the likelier given his lack of game time under Rohl and the fact that he’s out of contract this summer.
Then it seems extremely likely that Devis Vasquez returns to AC Milan following the recent arrival of Beadle.
In terms of incomings, a midfielder and new striker, and maybe a new centre-back seem like the key points of interest for Rohl; Bambo Diaby failed to impress yesterday and that could prompt the German to target a new defender this month.
Sheffield Wednesday remain in 22nd place of the Championship table but now four points from safety, with a home game against 6th place Coventry City on the agenda for next weekend.
