Sheffield Wednesday have a few problem positions in the side, with one being right-back.
For Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl this month, new strikers seems like the main priority.
Rohl has already said so and it makes sense given the fact that Bailey Cadamarteri is the only Owls striker firing this season.
But there’s other options in the side that could do with new bodies and one such position is right-back.
Dominic Iorfa faces a prolonged period on the sidelines with a muscle injury and that’s recently given Liam Palmer a run in the XI.
But the Sheffield Wednesday veteran has put in some questionable performances and it could force Rohl to bolster the right-back position this month.
Mason Holgate potentially leaving Southampton this month
One suitable option to come in could be Everton’s Mason Holgate.
The 27-year-old joined Southampton on loan in the summer but has featured just five times in the Championship, with the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters keeping him out of the XI on most matchdays.
Saints boss Russell Martin has recently said that ‘conversations’ will take place regarding his future, with Martin also failing to rule out the Englishman potentially returning to Goodison Park this month; Sky Sports say that the Toffees are expected to recall Holgate.
Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand once described Holgate as a player with ‘ridiculous’ ability.
Holgate could be perfect Sheffield Wednesday addition
Wednesday’s defence has become more watertight under Rohl in the past few weeks.
In their last 10 games the Owls have conceded 12 but have kept two clean sheets; in the 1-0 win at Stoke City and then 1-0 win at Preston.
There’s visible improvements from the Xisco Munoz era but there’s certainly room for improvement, and on the right side of defence is somewhere the Owls could definitely strengthen.
And Holgate given his Premier League pedigree could be a shrewd addition for the second half of the season.
He has 149 total appearances for Everton with 126 of those coming in the Premier League, having previously represented England at U20 and U21 level.
And Holgate’s attacking nature could be ideal for this high-tempo Sheffield Wednesday side under Rohl.
As per Sofascore, Holgate boasted an impressive 1.01 expected goals in the Premier League last season, despite featuring just eight times in the top flight with Everton, also averaging 0.8 key passes per game.
But Holgate also did the defensive work acutely too; he averaged 0.9 interceptions per game last season, 1.4 tackles, and an impressive 3.3 clearances.
What’s more is that Holgate is versatile, capable of playing as a centre-back or a right-back, and with the centre-back position also lacking in depth and quality, bringing in a player with Holgate’s adaptability would be a huge addition to the Sheffield Wednesday defence.
