Sheffield Wednesday are in for an uncertain transfer deadline day after snapping up eleven new players this summer.
The Owls enjoyed most of their business early doors, bringing Ike Ugbo and James Beadle back to the club, as well as signing another goalkeeper, two defenders, three midfielders and three attackers.
While Shea Charles came through the door this week, Sheffield Wednesday are hopeful of making further additions as they look to bolster their ranks.
Meanwhile, fans can expect to see more players leaving before tonight’s deadline, having made their first sale in Bambo Diaby last week.
Wednesday will have some key transfer decision to make today – including two players who could potentially arrive.
Three transfers Sheffield Wednesday could compete on Deadline Day
Michael Smith
Smith has been linked with a move away from Hillsborough since January, with Derby County previously eager to lure him away.
Danny Rohl made the decision to keep the striker at the club though and he went onto play a key role in their survival, netting in an important 2-2 draw against Norwich City.
While Smith has picked up two goal contributions in four games in all competitions this season, he could still be offloaded back to League One.
Wrexham are one club interested in signing the 32-year-old, but Rohl is yet to make a decision on his future.
When asked about Smith, the German said: “He trained in the morning. Let’s see with Michael, what happens there.
“In the morning, I had a good conversation with him. Michael is such a great character. In January, we made the decision. He played a lot in the second leg, maybe more than he expected.
“Let’s see where we are on Friday and then you can ask me again where we are with the transfers.”
A new centre-back
Rohl admitted that he wanted to sign a new centre-back in July, saying: “I think if you look at the positions we have signed in, I am very happy with the full-back positions, it’s a good challenge.
“We have done something in the wing positions, we have done something in the striker position. All in all we know we have to do something in the midfield, it is important, we want to do something in the centre-backs as well. Then we can go forward.”
Reports have since claimed that Wednesday are looking to sign a left-footed ball-playing defender, but are yet to be linked with any specific names.
Given their struggles defensively in recent games, the Owls should really consider swooping for a centre-back to partner Di’Shon Bernard before the deadline.
Ike Ugbo back-up
Wednesday have already added Ugbo and Jamal Lowe to their ranks, but the departure of Bailey Cadamarteri and potentially Smith could leave them light in the No.9 role.
The Owls did also bring in Charlie McNeill, but his ‘sloppy’ performance against Grimsby Town may concern Rohl and he could look to bring in a new back-up for Ugbo.
They are expected to look to the Premier League loan market ahead today, but free-agent Aaron Connolly could also be a good shout after netting eight times for Hull City last season.
